Catwalk Review: Ralph Lauren Collection A/W 2011/12

DESIGNER:Ralph Lauren

INSPIRATION: A recent trip to China

TOP LOOKS: A white dolman-sleeve blouse with slim trousers was a lovely opener; Shetland tweed blazer with shearling lapel and velvet black dress with beading; silk jade evening dress on longstanding house beauty Valentina; merlot-hued one-shoulder velvet top with crystallised sleeve and a full black maxiskirt

ACCESSORIES: Jade jewellery galore; velvet, satin and lacquer heels in shades of red and black; evening bags adorned with jade; shearling clutches

WHO WAS THERE: The full Lauren family - including wife Ricky, daughter Dylan, sons Andrew and David (with bride-to-be Lauren) - plus all the editorial heavyweights

WHAT WE THOUGHT: Lauren's recent sojourn to China served as the starting point for the collection shown today, and real-life-to-runway translation was pretty literal. Each look featured jade jewellery and a red lip, and there was an embroidered cape and round-eyeglasses combo that was straight outta Shanghai. But while these parts of the show seemed overly costumey, the clothes spoke for themselves. Underneath the styling were luxurious separates that could stand the test of time: black leather jackets, turtlenecks, pencil skirts, smart silk tops, menswear-inspired trousers, and a smattering of LBDs that will never go out of style. The closing looks were a stunning array of Lauren's signature gowns, many adorned with crystals and channelling Art Deco elegance.
