There was a very fashionable crowd at the glamorous Metropolitan Opera gala premiere of Rossini's Le Comte Ory last night.

The event was hosted by Yves Saint Laurent, so it followed that all the stars were wearing the design house's gorgeous creations.

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen turned heads when they stepped out on to the red carpet in matching sunglasses.

It's not often that the identical twins choose to wear identical items of clothing too, but they both donned the John Lennon-inspired look as they arrived at the event. But their looks couldn't have been more different.

While Ashley donned a chic black shift dress with a statement green stole, sister Mary Kate wore a long black polka dot dress with a sleeveless grey coat.

Claudia Schiffer was stunning as usual in a halterneck dress with a stylish side split, while Claire Danes wowed in a YSL one-shoulder gown.

And in the sea of black, Emmy Rossum was a breath of fresh air in her stand-out emerald dress with its bejewelled purple waistband and matching purple peep-toes.
