EastEnders Baby Tommy: Cot Death Story Reaches Climax

It was the soap storyline that caused outrage amongst viewers and, allegedly, its own stars to quit the show: the cot death and baby swap plot.

The story began when crazed Ronnie Branning snatched Kat Moon's healthy son Tommy and swapped him with her dead baby James, in scenes which shocked viewers and cot death campaigners alike.

But figures show 10.6 million viewers turned in last night to see the story's conclusion, as baby Tommy was reunited with his mum Kat (Jessie Wallace) and her partner Alfie (Shane Richie).

The show's bosses were said to be celebrating as their viewing figures beat ITV rivals, Coronation Street, by a million.

A source at the BBC told The Sun: 'We are pleased, as a lot of hard work went into that episode - and everyone is on Easter holidays.'
