Love it, or loathe it, you can't deny that royal wedding headgear was memorable, to say the least.

With it's own dedicated Facebook page - 130,000 fans and counting - the Philip Treacy himself - who also created sister Eugenie's feathered fascinator - has stepped forward to defend the design, saying: "she looked gorgeous."

"My inspiration was beauty and elegance," he told HollywoodLife.com. "It's a 21st century royal wedding."

"They didn't tell me [what they wanted] because I've known them for a long time and I wanted them to look gorgeous and beautiful."

"They trusted me to make them," he continued. "Gorgeous and beautiful can be open to interpretation."

"I thought they looked gorgeous and beautiful. But no one is crying if anyone didn't."

We couldn't help but be reminded of the on-stage production of the Lion King...
