A new study has revealed we are producing a 'generation of weaklings' thanks to the time kids spend on their computers and games consoles.
Fitness experts studied the behaviour and sporting prowess of 10-year-olds over several years, and found that as more and more kids swap outdoor play for vegging in front of computer screens, so their strength declines.
The researchers found that the number of sit-ups youngsters could do dropped nearly 30 per cent between 1998 and 2008, whilst only one in 10 children failed to hold their own weight hanging on wall bars in 1998, the number doubled to a staggering one in 20 by 2008.
The survey - which was conducted by Essex University - also found that when children did fewer traditional activities like tree-climbing, their arm strength dropped 26 per cent and their grip by seven per cent.
Dr Gavin Sandercock, an expert in children fitness said that outdoor play and 'traditional' past times made children stronger: 'Typically, these activities boosted children's strength, making them able to lift and hold their own weight.'
