A newborn baby has tipped the scales at a whopping 14 lb, 3.8 oz.

New arrival Matthew was born by caesarian section after mum, Emily Maldanado, endured two days of labour before doctors stepped in to give her a hand.

Emily, and husband Jose had been told to expect a big baby, but Matthew surprised everyone with his size, and is the biggest baby the Natividad Medical Center in America has ever delivered.

Weighing in at 14 lbs 3.8, oz, Matthew is nearly twice the size of the average American newborn baby, which weighs 7.5 lbs at birth.

Speaking about the extra large delivery, new mum Emily says even the doctors were shocked when Matthew finally emerged:

'They took him out and the doctor started saying 'damn', so they put him on the scale.'

Despite his size, Matthew didn't quite make the record books. The largest known birth happened in 1878, when a Canadian mum welcomed a son weighing an enormous 23 lb,

12 oz.
