William And Kate Visit Canada Wildfire Town

Canada Royal Visit

First Posted: 06/07/11 10:46 BST Updated: 04/09/11 11:12 BST   PA

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are to visit a Canadian town devastated by wildfires that forced thousands of residents to flee.

William and Kate will fly to Slave Lake, Alberta, to take a mini-bus tour of parts of the town that were affected by the blazes in May. The fire forced the complete evacuation of the settlement's 7,000 residents and is considered the largest displacement in the province's history.

The Duke and Duchess will also meet rescue workers who fought the fires.Hundreds of firefighters converged on the town to tackle the blazes and officials knocked on hundreds of doors to ensure everyone had left.

When the fires were at their height, oil companies in Alberta, the country's largest energy producing province, were forced to shut off thousands of barrels of output.
Kevin MacLeod, the Canadian secretary to the Queen, said the visit was a gesture to say thank you to the emergency services for their efforts. The royal couple will also meet families who were forced to leave their homes.

After the visit the couple will fly on to Calgary - the final leg of their Canada visit - and take a 24-hour break from the tour.

The Duke and Duchess are already in the middle of a test of their nobility. In this state of economic and environmental crises, will they side with wealth and power or find the strength to speak for the people. Are they to define themselves as figureheads of Disneyesque proportions or real leaders concerned for their citizens and subjects and standing for the good of the nation and the hope of the future. Too long the monarchy has sided with the Thatcherites and corporatists, it is already time fot them to decide where to spend the capital of admiration that they have accumulated. Do they find their voices as true leaders of the country or take the safe route of quiet indifference and pageantry? It would be nice to hear nobility speaking for principles and noble purposes, in the defence of issues important to the nation and its people, instead of defending elite corporatists and free market financial mountebanks. They seem smart enough to find their way to embody the better aspects of nobility in service of their people. It would be a thing of hope if they found such a space of intelligence within their love. They could, I suspect, then win not only the hearts of their subjects but the trust of them as well.

They seem to be having a blast. So happy for them; and it's wonderful that Will has her.

those of us who care about the well-being of our fellow man and that those who responded to a crisis get recognition for their effort.

Jimmy, you are no fool...
I had to look up Saxe Coburgs, I guess it is much like here in the States. We are constantly fed news about inane, insipid, celebrities. Long ago I opted out of watching Public news broadcast and decided it was better to interact with people such as yourself on the net. At least we can exchange opinions instead of accepting the narrative.

Problem is your posts are laced with negatives and insults, which in turn
disqualifies you as an exchanger of opinions.

I suggest you leave the interacting to people that merit response and go
back under your rock.

I seem to be the first person ever to comment on a royal story in HuffPostUK!

Unfortunately words fail me.
