So a director actually directing him is unacceptable to him, and he maintained his integrity by making 'G I Joe' ?
While he did appear in two of the best Doctor Who episodes ever ("The Hollow Child/ The Doctor Dances") his constant mugging and gurning at the camera were annoying. Tennant really got the series going again.
Smith, on the other hand has been a disaster, even worse that Colin Baker.

Matt Smith is completely brilliant, as was David Tennant, and as was Chris Eccleston. All three brought something to the role that was unique. And that is as it should be.

That said, I think Eccleston's a prickly personality. David Tennant's has always said his time making the show was wonderful and his unfailing kind behavior on the set is legendary. Smith also appears to be as gracious and is enjoying himself as much. Frankly, I think Eccleston comes off sounding bitter, which is too bad.

I love this guy. I could watch his facial expressions for hours. He has spoiled me to get enthusiastic about either David Tennant or Matt Smith -- both very competent Doctors -- but they're just not him.

I can understand him not liking the politics and bullying of the production, but I don't understand that he didn't like that the directors were telling him how to play the part. That's what directors are for. Still, I'm curious to know how he would have done the part differently.

Eccelston brought a modern, updated look to The Doctor, which was essential to make the show successful. Tom Baker was great and set the standard for all those who came afterwards, but a Doctor of the 21st Century needed something a little more.

I still think David Tennant beats all them, including Baker, Eccelston and Smith, but Tennant's portrayal built upon what Eccelston did before him.

I think you're spot-on about Eccleston's performance. I loved him as the Ninth and he set the tone for the new series. But, in a way, it was Tennant who was more of a bridge from the classic Doctors--I feel he blended Peter Davison's more laid-back Doctor with Jon Pertwee's crusading protector while making the role his own in a way that felt right for a new generation.

I bow down to your superior Dr. Who fanhood. Great analysis--I knew I liked Tennant for his connection to the past, but could not have put it together like that, thanks!
