PRESS ASSOCIATION -- The English Defence League's planned march through the capital next month has been blocked by the Home Secretary.

Theresa May banned all marches in Tower Hamlets, east London, and four neighbouring boroughs in the capital for a 30-day period following a request from Scotland Yard Acting Commissioner Tim Godwin.

The move comes amid fears of violence and disorder if the march was allowed to go ahead.

Mrs May said: "Having carefully considered the legal tests in the Public Order Act and balanced rights to protest against the need to ensure local communities and property are protected, I have given my consent to a ban on all marches in Tower Hamlets and four neighbouring boroughs for a 30-day period.

"I know that the Metropolitan Police are committed to using their powers to ensure communities and properties are protected.

"We encourage all local people and community leaders to work with the police to ensure community relations are not undermined by public disorder."

Nick Lowles, director of the anti-extremist campaign group Searchlight, said: "This decision is a victory for common sense.

"The EDL clearly intended to use the proposed march to bring violence and disorder to the streets of Tower Hamlets. Their plan has been foiled."

He added: "We congratulate Theresa May and the Metropolitan Police on their decision, as well as those ordinary Londoners who have joined with Searchlight and local community groups in opposing this divisive demonstration.

"Legitimate protest is healthy. Violence and intimidation are not."

Yes an ethnic Carnival (Nottnghill) is permitted straight after the riots but natives protesting against Islamic Extremism isn't, another reason to vote BNP

Nothing native about the thugs that were about to desend on East London. They are just looking for a punch up now that violence is constrained after football matches.

That's interesting. Can you give some references?

There have also been claims that Breivik attended EDL demonstrations in London and Newcastle upon Tyne last year. One alleged EDL activist posted a comment online on Sunday stating: "[B]ar one or two doubt the rest of us ever met him, altho he did come over for one of our demo in 2010 … but what he did was wrong."

Another alleged EDL supporter suggested in a separate forum that she had come across Breivik in the UK. "OMG [Oh, my God] … HIM?! He wrote some books and did talks didn't he?"

Hitler was a socialist? Nope, he was a mass murderer. If `freebies` didn`t work then his SA henchmen would do a good job of beating people to try and `persuade` them.

You need help.

I wouldn't mind a secular constitution. I don't trust ANY religion in bed with government.

This country was built on Christianity, our values today are built on it but if you don't trust it perhaps North Korea would suite you

Only two commandments are laws. But they are laws in other countries too.

But you're right, the bible was for some things, like justifying slavery and keeping women as second class citizens.

The truth is the Lib-Lab-Con will allow their UAF thugs to protest...........well if its those against the establishment but anyone else gets banned.

Even after the riots the Notting-hill Carnival has been allowed because the Lib-Lab-Con are afraid of what their new friends of the multicultural experiment will do, fact

While I generally support freedom of expression, I think the Home Secretary was right to ban the EDL march in this instance.

The march may be banned, but the demonstration is apparently going ahead.

Let's hope that the far-left UAF agitators don't turn up looking to cause trouble.

You know pefectly well that thse EDL marches and protest are excuse for footbal hooligans to threaten and beat people up when there's no match on.
01:34 PM on 08/28/2011
You don't know anyway. The media hasn't been able to take photo's oh them or hardly mention them at the events because the government didn't want people to see more of this http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1259409/Police-attack-right-wing-group-anti-fascists-clash-violent-street-protests.html

Great. By refusing to address the arguments at hand in a rational manner we only serve to give them the vindication that they dont deserve. We need to be talking these guys down not banning their protests because we dont agree with them!
05:13 AM on 08/27/2011
The EDL don't offer any rational arguments.

It's little more than an offshoot from football hooligan groups.

The only reason we know this is because they are allowed to march. We then turn up and counter march so that they know they are wrong as has happened a number of times.

The problem is when we start banning marches simply because we dont like the people marching, its the thin end of the wedge. Whats next burning their books to try and destroy their ideas.

No, we know what they stand for even without their marches. Their website is explicit in letting people know what kind of people they are.

It isn't. Banning marches has a public safety issue to it. A book does not.

Talking to their leaders is a good idea. But you cannot debate with a mob.

I tried talking to a dog once. Its reply was a bark. Still don`t understand what it was saying, but I`m sure it made a lot more sense than some of those EDL lot.
