This is about UK joining in with a US fusion project - great, but not a UK project nor (as per front page) the UK starting a fusion project.

There are a couple of UK fusion projects though. Culham Centre itself has JET and MAST.

Alas, I think that this attempt to "emulate the solar process" and set up a self-sustained fusion reaction are doomed to continued frustration. As will eventually soon be abundantly clear, the Sun is most likely not powered internally by nuclear fusion.

Someone will invariably respond, "The math, the math, the math!" But, as I have pointed out before, math can be (and often is) used to describe all sorts of un-reality, things that cannot and do not actually exist in the real world. Despite herculean efforts for decades, no one has been able to produce this kind of reaction in a lab; no one ever will.

There is another way to see it.

"The stars receive their power from outside, not inside. Any nuclear reactions are taking place on the surface of the Sun and not in its core. The solar wind is an electric current connecting the Sun with its family of planets and with its galactic clan, so the 90-year-old theory of fusion firing the solar furnace needs to be reexamined."

There is indeed another way to see it. The way I see it, nuclear physicists have demonstrated fusion and have made superb predictions of nuclear reactions and particles, all of which are consistent with the long-established idea of solar core fusion. And anyone who ignores all the positive evidence for the conventional model of solar fusion, and the associated evidence of nuclear interactions, is steering close to crackpot land.

The undeniable fact that fusion, in places that are not under tremendous pressure, is very difficult to extract energy from is not an indication that the Sun works by some undemonstrated alternative process.
