www.newstatesman.com:

I am greeted by a smiling Ed Miliband at the doorway of his Westminster office on a sunny, September morning. It is the first time I have met the Labour leader since James Macintyre's and my biography of him was published in June. I can't contain my curiosity. What did he make of it? "I'm really embarrassed to say I haven't read it," he says, with a laugh. "I'm sorry. It's nothing personal. I just think, whether it's good or bad stuff, you're better off not reading it. It's your job to keep your eye on the prize."

From the interview (after indicating that Government has a10 point lead on the economy):

' However, he believes that Labour has a credible and coherent alternative. "We have a very clear plan: cut VAT to get the economy moving, use the bankers' bonus tax to get young people back to work and build new homes, and have proper, international, co-ordinated action. At the moment, you've got collective austerity. '
----------------------------------------------
The reason for Government 10 point lead is made clear and simple. Labour's economic policies lack focus. Banker's bonus tax can pay to get young people back to work and build new homes? How many young people? How many new homes?

Cut VAT? That does not get the economy moving. it increases consumption for a short period. It is a temporary measure. Like New Labour kicking costs down the road with PFI, cutting VAT is just a delaying tactic. temporary feel-good.

Ed Balls is short on ideas.

Yes Mike, it is... it is every bit as dishonest as telling students there will be no tuition fees a short time before voting to approve them.
Glass houses... stone throwing..
Is there a bell ringing somewhere?

You are right it was dishonest of Labour to promise no tuition fees, then have a majority government and bring them in. As is was labour promising not to increase them and then tripling them.

I think their exists a real difference when in majority government you break your manifesto commitments compared to being in minority government and being faced with making compromises in the national interest. As some of the Liberal Democrats have done as you will know they voted three ways on this, as our party policy (incidentally we are the only ones whose policy is still decided by our conference), remains to remove Tuition fees.

I do think Liberal Democrats could of handled this better but I think the Liberal Democrats get less media credit than they deserve.
