The Man from Uncle is coming to Weatherfield.

Veteran actor Robert Vaughn, who shot to fame in the 1960s as secret agent Napoleon Solo, will play a wealthy American who met Roy Cropper's mother Sylvia Goodwin (Stephanie Cole) on a cruise.

He is expected to appear on Coronation Street for three weeks early next year.

Show insiders claim his arrival on the street after Sylvia's return from the cruise will "put the cat firmly amongst the pigeons".

Robert, who appeared in The Magnificent Seven with Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen, has become a familiar face on British television with his role in the BBC show Hustle where he plays conman Albert Stroller.

I really enjoy the way Vaughn continues to reinvent himself. His insouciance was ideal for the tongue-in-cheek antics of "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," he was the perfect supercilious political snake in "Bullitt," and he's charm personified as the impish Albert Stroller on "Hustle."

Nice to see he's found favor among the Brits, who produce so much quality television.

U.N.C.L.E. was a huge hit in Britain. I was a great fan myself -- probably had a lot to do with the major crush I had on Ilya Kuryakin. My first blond!

From what I recall, McCallum enjoyed a much higher "crush factor" than did Vaughn.

I don't remember seeing much of McCallum after U.N.C.L.E. - although his filmography indicates he continued to work pretty steadily - until the early '90's, when he turned up as the grim and dogged detective on the trail of Ned Beatty in a charming film called "Hear My Song."

These days, of course, he can be seen as the cuddly "Ducky" on "NCIS" (a show I don't much care for, but which my partner enjoys). He's held up remarkably well - astonishing, actually, to realize he's 78 - and although there's not much blond left, he's still got most of that hair (more than I can say for myself, 20 years his junior; my "blond" left long ago, as did the hair to which it was attached).

I too was a fan of both the show and Illya Kuyakin.
