Ronnie Biggs Promotes Book Despite Being Unable To Walk Or Talk

Ronnie Biggs, the Great Train Robber, has been on compassionate release from prison since 2009 following a stroke, but his health rallied enough for him to be out promoting his latest autobiography on Thursday.

82-year-old Biggs is unable to walk or talk, but showed that he was still in good spirits by holding up a board that read 'crime doesn't pay' and sticking out his tongue.

His new book "Odd Man Out: The Last Straw" follows up on his 1994 autobiography covering his return to the UK, his re-arrest and life since his compassionate release.

His gang stole £2.6 m in one of the most famous heists in history.

Biggs was given a 30-year sentence for the robbery, in which the train driver died, but he managed to escape from Wandsworth prison in a furniture van after only 15 months.

He went on the run for more than 30 years, finally ending up in Brazil, where authorities refused to extradite him. However, he returned to the UK voluntarily in 2001 for medical treatment.

He was imprisoned to resume his original sentence, but was released in July 2009 as it was believed that he was close to death.

Biggs finally expressed remorse over the death of the driver in an ITV news interview on the eve of the book release.

But the son of the driver told ITV News that he was sceptical about the apology, pointing out that Biggs is still making money from the crime with this new book.
