'Top Gear's Richard Hammond: 'From Day One, If I Crash, Jeremy Has Laughed' (INTERVIEW)

Richard Hammond

"It will have all the attitude of Top Gear, but on a full day out," explains Richard Hammond of the Top Gear Live show taking place this weekend at Excel at London's Docklands.

This will mean lots and lots of cars, including tantalising glimpses of Lamborghinis, Ferraris and the like, as well as ones in a more achievable price range. But can these four-wheeled beasts be put through their paces without Germany's Nürburgring or Romania's Autostrada seen in the programme?

"There's an indoor race track, so people will be able to get behind the wheel and star themselves in a reasonably priced car," explains Hammond. "They'll be able to record laps, probably in better style than Jeremy (Clarkson), James (May) and myself" - who will also be on hand to present the live show.

There will no doubt be throngs at the event, testament to the enduring popularity of what started as a BBC2 speciality programme for confirmed motoring enthusiasts, but is now broadcast all over the world, making international stars of its three presenters.

How does Hammond feel about such global recognition?

"It's very strange filming in other countries," he reflects, "for example, driving through Nazareth last year hearing people shouting our names was just bizarre."

Hammond and his co-presenters were filming last year's Christmas special in the Middle East, on a mammoth expedition which saw them landed, quite literally, in northern Iraq and tracing the journey of the Three Wise Men to Jesus's fabled birthplace. It was a massive undertaking - what can we expect this year?

"We've just finished filming - in Mumbai this time," is pretty much all Hammond will give away. "We noticed there was a lack of trade between the UK and India, so it felt right to help forge some links."

And no doubt it will. Steve Coogan recently described Top Gear, on which he has been a guest twice, as "a stronger BBC voice abroad than the World Service". Is this something Hammond predicted?

"Not at all, and it wouldn't have worked if we had," he says. "All we set out to do ten years ago was make the best car show we possibly could. The minute we start trying to contrive it to be something else, I'm sure it will stop working."

The same applies to the chemistry between the truculent trio.

"It's never changed," reveals Hammond. "From day one, if Jeremy crashes into something, I will laugh, and I expect him to in return. You couldn't fake it, people would soon suss us out."

Top Gear Live runs at Docklands' Excel from 24-27 November. Richard Hammond will soon be appearing in his series, Crash Course, travelling the US and driving some of the country's toughest vehicles. The programme is produced by BBC Worldwide. And Top Gear At The Movies is now available on DVD - watch the trailer below:

I’m so hooked on this show, and it has caused me to constantly look up British culture, history, politics. Just so I can keep up with the inside jokes on where people are from and current politics in UK. Like the article says "Strong BBC voice...." and I'm a colonist. Just FYI - seems the Netflix versions are shortened and a bit is taken out of the original show – the BBC America versions seem to be more true to what was shown in UK.

Top Gear is amazing. Who else remembers the uproar from their Volkswagen ad? "From Berlin to Warsaw in one tank."

lol!
Sofa King true.
So many US shows are clones of British ones. For 40 years now.
And with the exception of The Office?
EVERY US versions has paled.
If not outright blown and died quickly......

My favorite show. BBC America is doing a marathon today. That episode where they build RVs on top of cars is hilarious.

Being Canadian of irish descent, I have always had an affinity for British radio and television. I identify with the culture as there are many similarities...especially in language. So, watching Top Gear has always turned out to be time well spent. I haven't seen a recent show in a while and this reminds me to set my DVR to record it .

Top Gear had a great road show where they visited Alabama, USA and they might as well of been Martians. Brilliant episode. One of the best exposés you will ever see on present day American, particularly the south.

I also liked an old episode where Clarkson drove the Ford GT (America's supercar) IN Detroit, and was complimented on his "ferrari".

Hung my head in shame on that one!

This is the ONLY show that all five in my family (Chicago) watch together--husband and me, 57 and 51 (not respectively), 22 and 20-year-old guys, and 16-year-old daughter, and laugh so hard sometimes we can't breathe. Love, love, love this show. I haven't seen the American version, but everyone else has and said it sucks. We are going back to season 1 and watching all the shows. BBC has a real winner here.

I did the same thing going back to watch all of them! Too bad the American show just is not nearly as fun and funny.

The American show needs to get first: Good people and second: don't try and imitate the British show. They need to work the concept and get some good writing as well. It can be done, but it isn't as simple as most American knock-offs of successful BBC programs.

Love the show, but this most recent movie was horrible, it was James and Richard just sitting on a couch talking about aspects to movies that loosely fit, the car soundtrack scene was not supposed to have music but it still did. Worse top gear film by far.

Cant wait for the new season to start.

It's good that hamster's so cooperative in keeping the tears running down clarkson's cheeks. It might take his mind off the legal fees for his superinjunction.

These smarmy buggers convinced me to buy a Jaguar. Best car I ever owned out of around forty cars. The US knock of crew couldn't sell me a can of motor oil.
