David Lammy: Understanding The UK Riots (VIDEO INTERVIEW)

First Posted: 9/12/2011 16:41 Updated: 14/12/2011 11:02

In this video interview, MP for Tottenham David Lammy discusses his new book Out Of The Ashes, a response to the summer riots that rocked Britain.

Speaking not just as the political representative but a life-long resident of the area where the events of August began, Lammy puts forward his case for why the riots happened, what they say about our society and what he feels needs to be done now to ensure mass-looting and violence doesn't break out in our streets again.

young kids should have jobs not hanging around on street corners they have to be taught respect and have a good work ethic instead of wanting things given to them on a plate and goverments should do more to help, if you dont go to uni your somehow regarded as useless, this country needs a young highly skilled work force not a second rate graduate workforce who cant make anything and think just because they have a degree they are special

Following in the footsteps of his illustrious leader - Dick Turpin Blair, he is obviously hoping to fill his pockets at the expense of others misfortunes.

Lammy's book sounds really interesting, but I think he overestimates the importance of the 1960s. Everyone should read Dominic Sandbrook's 'White Heat' for a compelling argument about why that decade's 'revolution' is overstated

Funny how KFC or Mcdonalds weren't looted... Guess they'd have nowhere to go and eat if so.

No it started because a group of thugs wanted an excuse to rob and plunder, the shot person was nothing to do with it, how many of them had heard of him, could quote his name or cared - answer none basic thuggery.

What to do to ensure the riots don't happen again..... Hmmmm...... How about teaching people that the world don't owe them something???? Or educating people that, no matter what their grievance, it doesn't mean they can go and cause million pounds worth of damage and steal items not for themselves, but to sell???? You want to be an entrepreneur -- get a business licence.

They have no idea do they?? As out of touch as ever with the real world, and real people trying to live their lives whilst being taxed out of existence. The economy would recover overnight if taxes and fuel duty were cut, but they don't want that do they?

There are so many people refered to as a 'celebrity', that now the 'none celebritiy' is becoming the minority and therefore the 'celebrity' but without income. Riots are fuelled by people who are struggling to make a decent living, or unemployed, or on minimum wage etc.who year-in and year-out keep seeing publicity about talentless ' celebrities' promoted by their agents, getting extremely large pay cheques, civil servants grossly overpaid with large pension, Bankers getting millions in what they call bonus payments in addition to their very large pay cheques, fiddling MP's overpaid Euro MPs, and so-on. After all, what real use is a footballer ?, yet they recieve millions.

So I can ask where my post is, but you still won't publish it, WHY? If you give me a good reason I will stop asking, until then though, who gave you the right to censor, good honest comment!!???
01:22 PM on 12/15/2011
I'm talking about the first one. The one which I gave my opinion of why the rioting started. It seems to have disappeard!!!

There is a limit to freedom of speech in a democracy: you are not allowed to tell the truth.

What was wrong with my post again Mrs Huffington??. Was it too grammatically correct??. Was the punctuation correct, and the spelling good?? How come my posts always go missing. No swear words, no racism - what do I have to do, to get my honest opinion printed on this page???

Who is it censoring my well written and concise remarks, and for why??

I agree that Enoch Powell warned us. However, he was probably a bit ahead of his time and the other politicians shot him down. He was a good policitician and a good man, who was just looking out for his country.

However, we cannot go back and need to find a way to improve things and put things right (if it is possible). We do need to sort out the immigration problem now. It is getting to the stage where we cannot cope.

Britain is a soft touch and we need to have stricter border controls etc.

The generations that are rioting and causing injury etc now are not the ones who came over here originally. It seems to be the ones who were born here a couple of generations down and have, perhaps, lost their identity. Some of the older people who have businesses and have worked hard are as upset about the situation as the white British people. Mind you, some of the white british youngsters are just as bad - they have no respect for people or property.

Enoch Powell was a racist, his views were shared by people who lived in a Colonial past, yesterday's people.
The only good thing about him was that he was telling the blacks sooner or later they will have to stand firm and defend and they did 30 years ago.
Lord Scarman reported and made Recommendations, The police he said is Institutionally racist, They are Corrupted in mind and actions the people of our country had to wait until The Brooks, Murdoch's, Coulson of this world to see the truth about most of them. Why did they go looking to justify their action to a small part of the public by Lying about Guns ect stereotyping all.
We have to go back, because if you do not know where you come from you cannot know where you are going.
I agree the generations that are rioting and causing injury are British kids 99% of them .
The fascinating thing is Colour is not an issue with them, they are progressing togather, friends mates, they are breaking down the Language and cultrial barrier, creating their own.
Multiculturalism is alive and kicking Mr Cameron-Powell.

You need to read comments by politicians of ALL parties when Powell died, they all said his words were taken out of context & he should have been listened to,he talked sense
02:33 PM on 12/24/2011
Strange then when he died MPs of all parties praised him,his speech was taken out of context
04:30 PM on 12/14/2011
as a nation we must be mad,,,how true these words are today,,,yet they were spoken many years ago by enoch powell,,,,,we were warned

Someone once said: 'When the Sunday Schools are empty the prisons will soon be full'. The breakdown in our society is linked to our lack of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and the sooner we as a nation turn back to the Living God, His Word and His Commandments, the sooner we will start to see our culture reformed.

This was never a riot, it had nothing to do with culture or colour, as there was all colours, poor and rich. It was a chance for the young people to vent their anger at society and law and order. For those who prefer to steel than work, to loot shops to sell the goods to make money and idiots to take part because they had nothing else to do.
09:43 PM on 12/14/2011
Yes. Exactly right that is. Too many young people blaming everyone else for their own situation.
09:00 PM on 12/21/2011
Totally agree.
