Tim Minchin Axed From 'Jonathan Ross Show' Christmas Special Over Woody Allen Jesus Song

The Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 22/12/2011 16:24 Updated: 22/12/2011 17:09

Tim Minchin has been axed from the Jonathan Ross Show Christmas Special, after ITV's director of television "demanded" his song, comparing Woody Allen to Jesus, was cut from the show.

Writing on his blog, the Australian comedian, who was set to star in the festive episode alongside Tom Cruise and the female cast of Downton Abbey, said: "Being Christmas, I thought it would be fun to do a song about Jesus, but being TV, I knew it would have to be gentle.

"The idea was to compare him to Woody Allen (short, Jewish, philosophical, a bit hesitant), and expand into redefining his other alleged attributes using modern, popular-culture terminology."

Minchin claims it wasn't a "particularly original idea... but it's quite cute" and goes on to describe how he fretted and feared over writing a song for such a large audience, giving up the little spare time he had to be involved in the show because he likes Jonathan Ross.

He wrote: "Jonathan and his wonderful producer, Suzi, have been incredibly supportive of me and so when they asked me to write a song for their pre-Christmas show, I didn't hesitate. It was the worst possible time to be writing a new song. I've been overworked and ill, was on tour, and was really feeling the stress."

According to Minchin, who's recently collected awards for the score to West End musical Matilda, reception to the song was generally favourable until: "Someone got nervous and sent the tape to ITV's director of television, Peter Fincham.

"And Peter Fincham demanded that I be cut from the show.

"He did this because he's scared of the ranty, shit-stirring, right-wing press, and of the small minority of Brits who believe they have a right to go through life protected from anything that challenges them in any way."

UPDATE: Jonathan Ross has now commented on Minchin's axing, writing on Twitter he said: "Really gutted that the brilliant @timminchin song has been cut from my show. Decision was out of my hands."

A comment from ITV and Peter Fincham has been requested, but was not available at the time this article was published.

Read his full blog post and watch the controversial video above, which he claims he already had footage of when they cut it from the show.

I thought it was on the conservatives in the United States who were ruining everything for everyone. I guess they're all over.

Smart. Funny (and he isn't always). Like the contemporary settings. Not at all nasty or hateful. Just some light slightly studentesque lampooning.

Fincham must have been a bit overwought.

I say believing in an imaginary friend is silly, as are the associated rituals.

They say that if I don't believe in their imaginary friend I will spend eternity in hell, suffering endless torment and agony.

Who is the one being offensive?

Oh get over it, you sound like a spoilt brat, SO WHAT you got your song turned down and you've been poorly boo hoo. Atrocrious as the song seems, who would write a song about Woody Allen and Jesus at Christmas. Christmas is about the birth of Jesus and about the children and giving. what you have to offer I don't want to know. Who wants to hear a song at Christmas about Woody Allen.

Ridiculous! As per usual in this country that we all love to live in becuase of its freedom given to us by those who fought in two wars and others still to this day fight to defend, we go over the top PC just because it may offend a few whilst the majority would laugh along with the joke (THATS WHAT IT IS AFTER ALL!!) all our comedians now tread so carefully that they are no longer free to tell jokes that would again make the majority laugh so not to offend the few. This country has changed sooooo much in my 40 years here, I can't begin to imagine what my children and grandchildren will live to see!!

I haven't a clue who Tim Minchin is but my guess is that he was axed from that awful Jonathan Ross's show is because he's much funnier than Jonathan Ross. Who in my opinion is not the slightest bit funny.
09:09 PM on 12/30/2011
wait till you see tim mincin's act...he's not funnier than jonathan ross...in fact he's less funny than a packet of ross grill steaks, which are not funny at all, apart from the strange taste, which has nothing to do with beef...or a grill ?

i wish they would pull jonathan ross out of the jonathan ross show.

Hear hear waddytog. I'm just pleased to read that at last some common sense seems to be taking place. This bloke is grunting because he spent time on writing the song and made himself ill, GOOD!, he should have known better than to have any truck with Ross, spend too much time with dogs and you will get treated like a dog. I refuse to wacth anything that has Ross in it, which means I do have to forego a few programmes that I would have otherwise watched and enjoyed, but I refuse to allow that repugnant man any space in my house, be it on TV, Radio or any other medium.

Another triumph for the nannying "new puritanism" that has gripped Great Britain by the throat. Note to sanctimonious TV bosses everywhere: we're all big boys and girls, some of us actually enjoy religions being sent up and ridiculed AND we can make up our own minds about what we see on the telly, thank you very much. Re-instate Tim Minchin NOW.

If I remember my Scripture correctly, Balaam possessed a certain four-footed creature. Quite appropriate really.
10:15 PM on 12/23/2011
Yes he did. Like a lot of "scripture" it's completely bonkers - probably written under the influence of bad wine and perhaps naturally occurring hallucinogens. A talking donkey indeed! Get real.

I suppose we will end up with four poofs and a piano then. Is there no end to the excitment of Christmas scheduling?
BTW- Jesus parodies have been around a long time and I remember a similar Woody Allen one being done. So Tim's version may have been a rip off- like most of his work.

Its a pity they have not pulled the plug on Ross as well for good. The show is crap/

I agree to some of the points put by Finni. The song would be offensive to a great deal of people, but the vainglorious Tim Minchin, of course, is unable to recognise that.

But he's being gentle and edgy and made himself sick. Now as much as I am actually a fan, the fact that the clip is out and about before the show has been aired makes me think he's getting the best of both worlds, considering that from what I've read it wasn't the right wing press that is the source of this story. He not only gets the benefit of the clip having being produced by a large company, it out on a lot of platforms and the publicity of how he was hard done to by having it cut from the Jonathon Ross show and Jonathon Ross gets a bit of attention for his show.

But maybe the time of year makes me cynical.
