Welcome To The Hood: Dad Delivers Son Into His Hoodie In Hospital Car Park

A new dad delivered his baby son into his hoodie after his heavily pregnant girlfriend was turned away from hospital.

Toni Pankhurst, 33, from Kidbrooke, south London was told by midwives at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich that she wasn't ready to give birth, and was advised to go for a walk with dad-to-be, Martin Dunsford.

Their baby boy, Phoenix William George Victor Dunsford was born into his dad's hoodie 10 minutes later in the hospital car park, weighing 5lb, 15oz.

Four police officers ran to help Toni as she went into labour. Martin later thanked them, saying they "went beyond the call of duty" to help the couple.

"Toni sat in the passenger seat. While I was getting the bags she shouted that her waters had broken," explains new dad, Martin.

"I grabbed the bags, got Toni out and locked the door. We got about eight steps from the car before she said 'the baby is coming'.

"I assumed she meant another contraction, but she screamed and said the baby is coming. I put my hand between her legs and felt a head. I held on to her and shouted for help and after what seemed like hours, but was only really about 30 seconds, four police officers heard our cries for help and came over.

"The second they got to us I pulled Toni's trousers down. As the four police officers were lying Toni down, I took off my hoodie and held the baby's head in the hoodie. As she got to the floor the rest of him came out into my hands.

"One policeman held her head and talked to her to try and keep her calm while the female officer was helping me. In the meantime, the other two policemen went to get help."

Martin has heaped praise on the Greenwich PCs, Chris Clare, Vicki Hurst, Leuan Hill and Martin Avis, who answered the couple's emergency call:

"I just really want to thank the officers who came to help us. Police sometimes get criticised for not doing enough, but I don't know what I would have done without them that night.

"The way they went way above and beyond the call of duty and helped us out was fantastic."

The officers even visited the couple and their new arrival afterwards with a bunch of flowers and a bear dressed in police uniform!

Congratulations Toni and Martin!
