It's official: this is the world's smallest frog.

Officially known as Paedophryne amauensis, the world's tiniest vertebrate is a newly discovered species, measuring just 7.7mm long.

That's right, 7.7mm. As you can see from the picture below, that's less that an American dime, or in British money, about the size of a 5p piece.

Louisiana State University's Chris Austin is the man to thank for the recent find, leading a team of American herpetologists - that's an "amphibian zoologists" to you and me - into darkest New Guinea to spot the miniature froglet.
