Cheryl Cole has offered her support to her Girls Aloud bandmate Nadine Coyle after a friend of the singer passed away.

On hearing the sad news that Nadine had lost her friend Charlene Griffiths - a teacher and athlete in her 20s - Cheryl reached out, tweeting: "I just want you to know I am thinking of you at this sad and tragic time. I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. God bless you all. All my love Cheryl xx"

A few hours earlier, Irish star Nadine tweeted: "Today is a very sad day for the family and friends of #CharleneGriffiths So shocked and saddened by this news. Life is so precious. Love..."

She later added: "Devastated @ my friend #CharleneGriffiths passing. God rest her soul, she was taken away far too soon. Her family are an inspiration. Xx"

Nadine, who is based in Los Angeles, has previously said she has little contact with her Girls Aloud bandmates but has denied reports of a feud with Cheryl.

After rumours surfaced the pair had fallen out over comments Nadine had made about the former X Factor star, the Irish singer tweeted: "Not true. Stop using me as the scape goat for lack of stories."

Sorry but this then becomes a story about Cole and Coyle, rather than the tragic loss of a young woman. How awful for the family. Surely given their history, whether speaking or not, Cheryl Cole could have picked up the phone and had a private conversation? Just my view, I don't do twitter so...

why post something like this??? so superficial on the face of what has actually happened and the fact the press make a story out of their relationship over the fact someone has died is just sad :O( what a horrible world we live in.

I'm sorry, but anyone who 'tweets' their love and condolences to a friend is not really a friend or really sincere at all. Sometimes human contact is what is needed.

Aol, how can you use the death of somebody to excuse yet another story about this woman? You are both disgraceful and macabre. Is there nothing sacred from the celebrity publicity machine? Utterly disgusted.

I love the very sexy/attractive group Girls Aloud (and their songs into the bargain!) but this is hardly what I would call newsworthy......a personal close friend dying of someone who has not been in the limelight for three years in essence..Had it been one of the actual group members who had suddenly passed away (such as Nadine or Cheryl, perish the thought), then it would be a different matter of course.

Lets hope Charlene Griffiths family don't see your comment.

For all you know her family may not have wanted anything published, and why did Nadine have to tweet her sentiments to Charlene's family if she was a friend - whatever happened to the telephone...

Very sweet, but I always feel slightly cynical when such personal messages of condolence are sent in this manner by celebrities. Surely a personal message unread by thousands of other mere mortals would be more appropriate, or is the fact that it is so public that makes her choose this way of passing on her thoughts? It's all in how you come across to the public I guess lol Call me cynical, I don't mind!
