Kevin Whately Hints That The Next Season Of 'Lewis' Could Be His Last

Inspector Morse

Kevin Whately has hinted that the next series of Lewis could be his last.

The star of the detective drama, which will have run for six series when this next batch of episodes are shown next year, pointed out at a Radio Times Cover party that his character was fast approaching "police retirement age".

Whately's character was originally the sergeant sidekick of Inspector Morse, played by the incomparable John Thaw. When Thaw died in 2002, TV bosses agreed that Whately had the acting chops and popular appeal to step into the vacuum of the leading role with his own series.

What Whately actually said was that *he* was approaching police retirement age. But the character of Lewis (he may have forgotten) is 5-6 years younger than the actor. So I'm hoping to see a good 2-3 more years of Lewis. While I love the character of Hathaway, I don't know that I'd rush right to the TV to watch a future series about the character in the way that I looked forward to Lewis despite the absence of Morse.

Looking forward to the new series - 'Hathaway'. Wonder who his sidekick will be?

Looking forward to the new series - 'Hathaway'. There's nothing to stop Hathaway stepping into Lewis's shoes, just as Lewis stepped upped into Morse's position. Would be very interesting to see who Hathaway's sidekick would be. And yes I do know it's fiction, even though nurse hasn't come round with my medication yet.
