An investigation is under way into claims that cuddly toy versions of the Olympic mascots are being made by workers suffering poor conditions in a Chinese factory.

Golden Bear, based in Telford, Shropshire, is making Olympic products based on Wenlock and Mandeville - the official mascots of the Olympics and Paralympics.

But an inquiry has been launched into allegations that workers at the Chinese factory which is making the toys for Golden Bear is breaching workers' rights.

Both the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (Locog) and Golden Bear are investigating claims that workers are labouring for up to 11.5 hours a day for as little as 26p an hour.

A London 2012 spokesman said they place a high priority on "environmental, social and ethical issues" when securing goods and services and are taking the allegations "extremely seriously".

He said: "We have asked our independent monitor to carry out a comprehensive investigation and review of these allegations.

"The outcome of this investigation will be made public as soon as it is concluded.

"We have contacted all of our licensees to reiterate to them the importance we place on the sustainable sourcing code they have each signed up to."

Golden Bear said it was also conducting an immediate investigation, but confirmed that the factory in question had passed inspections by the International Council of Toy Industries (Icti).

The company's statement said: "Golden Bear is extremely concerned about recent reports that a factory involved in a small amount of the production of the company's Olympic product could be in breach of workers' rights.

"We are a family-run business that takes these issues very seriously indeed and has in place certificates of compliance at all factories used to produce our products.

"We are therefore in the process of conducting an immediate investigation and will be able to comment on these findings as soon as they are known to us.

"We can confirm, however that the factory in question has passed Icti Care Process inspection and that we will be working with the BTHA (British Toy and Hobby Association), Icti Care and other authorities in order to resolve any conditions that may have been breached."

When the 2012 London Olympic committee picked Golden Bear to produce the mascots, it wasn't the factories working conditions they were looking at but the price per unit, and is symptomatic of many of the Olympic committee's decisions from ticket sales, to sponsorship selection, where they have shamelessly put profits before people at every turn.

Are these mascots really the best our designers could come up with or are they a bunch of overeducated 'suits' idea of trendy merchandise? I will never buy memorabilia thats not made in the country I'm visiting. What's the point. My BF's Chinese and she just will not buy anything 'made in China' She says 'It's all cheap tat, unreliable, over priced and the workers are exploited'. She told me some horror stories about the way workers were forced to work on their Olympic buildings.

These things really are disgusting, along with the logo. The ticketing system was/is a joke. There will be half empty stadiums after having "sold out". Traffic on the A12 (that's a road by the way) will be even more gridlocked than normal. No work was created for local people, the legacy will be zero. What a load of rubbish the olympics are. The number of times we will have to suffer "obviously, definitelt, living the dream, this is what it's all about, all the hard work was for this". YAWN. I'm out of here when the olympics are on. Most Chinese workers are paid peanute, that's why everything made there is cheaper than the equivalent made over here was 15 years ago, you can buy a brand new iron for £1.50, the plug would cost more made here. I still think that overall it would be better to make all the stuff here. It's mostly unnecessary consumer garabage anyway.

"Unnecessary consumer garbage" -- indeed it is ..in fact, I suggest it should be law to mark up all the stuff with a label stating exactly that, the same way that cigarettes are.

So we know that none of that stuff is made in the UK and maybe a whole bunch of other stuff. Where exactly does the UK reap the reward for spending billions on a glorified sports day.

Just the usual G.B. making a fortune paying foriengers peanuts to produce cheap and shoddy goods at any cost to the workers rather than pay people over here a decent wage and maybe break even , jobs here tax paid, no import tax against this rubbish for being shipped half way round the world, try flying to London and we have to pay a tax on our flights to make us greener, dont make me laugh!! stop this chinese trade right now and bring jobs back to the U.K.

I'd say they were on drugs, no normal minded person would design something so hideous.
