RBS Chairman Sir Philip Hampton Will Not Receive £1.4m In Shares Bonus

Sir Philip Hampton

The chairman of the taxpayer-funded Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) will not receive a shares bonus worth £1.4m, the bank said on Saturday.

Sir Philip Hampton's decision comes days after RBS chief executive Stephen Hester came under fire over a £963,000 bonus awarded to him.

An RBS spokesman confirmed: "Sir Philip Hampton will not receive the 5.17m shares he was awarded in 2009 when he joined RBS."

Sir Philip is thought to have told the bank's remuneration committee it would not be appropriate for him to take the shares to which he is entitled.

He was given the scheme when he was appointed at the 83%-state-owned bank as part of a three-year long-term incentive deal.

It is understood RBS were not due to offer Sir Philip the share bonus, which is based on a variety of factors, until next month.

But the chairman chose to waive the entitlement earlier.

Sir Philip's decision is likely to pile more pressure on Hester, who has faced calls from unions, politicians - including Boris Johnson - and the public to turn down his award of almost £1m.

Prime Minister David Cameron insisted it was up to the chief executive to decide whether to give up his bonus.

"It's a matter for him," he said at Chequers.

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond, who is a former RBS economist, said: "This is a welcome development but these circumstances cannot be left to individual decisions. They must be a matter of public policy.

"On this matter the Westminster parties have shown themselves to be totally deficient."

He called for pay restraint to help sustain public services, adding: "How can that be maintained against the background of huge bonuses being paid in organisations which are still within the public sector? This blatant inequality thus threatens economic recovery.

"Both the coalition government and the Labour party are equally culpable.

"Labour negotiated the very deal with Stephen Hester that they now complain about while the coalition parties huff and puff about shareholder democracy but stand by idly when they carry responsibility for the public shareholding.

"They also have the option of a further tax on bonuses but instead all the Tory rhetoric is on reducing the top rate of tax.

"Collectively the Westminster parties display the complete abdication of responsibility of political parties out of touch with the public of both Scotland and England."

More corporate greed here: www.publicansam.blogspot.com

And as for huntin' , shootin' and fishin' Hester ... the real story is that over the 5 years of his contract his total pot will be close to £50millions ... the bonus this year is a red herring.

Quote: "Sir Philip Hampton will not receive the 5.17m shares he was awarded in 2009 when he joined RBS."

So Hampton got his bonus just for signing on to RBS not for anything he has done whilst there. This was described on the BBC this morning as a "golden hello". Therefore the situation is not the same as with Hester.

Hampton's RBS salary is £750,000. He is also non-executive Chairman of Sainsburys which pays £345,000, so he's not exactly a full time employee of either company. I expect that Hampton considered that he would find it almost impossible to justify his bonus and took the easy way out.

What about the rest, take off them what they robbed the taypayers of, No chance, they all go scott free as usual, Where really they should be in jail like the rest of the thieves, they never will because there is a law for the rich and none for the poor, but its been going on for years and will continue for centuries to come, a happy country is a properous one where people can have there say, Thats over now, you can say what certain people decide wether you can say it or not, Freedom of Speech is over, has been for the last 14 years, it wont change now.

I totally agree with your comments, with one exception
It is abundantly clear to all who live north of the border, That the relationship between Westminster, the banking and financial system, is worked closely hand in hand. To my ,and your detriment.
In all parts of the country north of London, this Tory government does nothing , in the way to assist the people of the UK. I have much contact with educated northern English friends.
And they feel as I do.
In Scotland , it is a popular belief, that with this way of political behaviour, the English dominated Westminster govrernment, show themselves , as poor representatives of the people of the UK. To my knowledge, no TV interviewer has asked David Cameron, of his is afiliation, and commitment to the global banking sysyem.

Have you never noticed that the 3 stooges never ever mention "Immigration" which has cost this country tens on Billions over the last 14 years, that has affected us as much as the bankers, Cameron lied his way into a coalition on the back of a promise that he would cut immigration to the bone, like the other stooge, He "U" Turned yellow, his spine went, he didnt want to be seen as a "Racist", anyone can call me what they like, i dont care, In "MY" country i should have the right to "Free" speeech which is being taken off us by the Jewish owned media, they own it all, and went hand in glove with the labour party to make this country Muliculturist, it hasnt worked and cost tens of thousands of "British jobs"because the immigrants are "Cheaper Labour", And the Unions have stood by and watched it happen along with the mainly "Labour party", men have fought and died for "Our" Freedom, i can you remember what Gordon Brown Said, "British Jobs For British People", hes well named, "Brown", like the lying verbal diarrhoe he was saying, Have a nice day.

Maybe Fabio Capello can be made to take a pay cut, because his pay cheque makes Stephen Hesters pay look like chicken feed. Capello has be milking it for a good few years and has no silverware in the cupboard to show for it. 8.5 million Euros P.A. for what? 35,416 Euros per week. Nice work if you can get it, for a part time job.

Good on him I agree, but it is easy to refuse a bonus when your basic pay is £750,000. But still he has to be praised.

If we are 'All in the together' we must be seen to be all in this together. It's not the end of the trough culture, it will make a few people feel a sense of 'Fairness' whatever this means. The poor pay and the rich get richer, It's time we had a government that made the rich pay and the poor get richer, but we all know that the only way of doing this is through higher taxes, increased government investment and a united sense of building a country fit for heroes. We did this in 1945. Unfortunately there are more zeros than heroes in Britain today.

Ive tried to comment but it seems to have vanished , this of course is the usual practice on here, they only print what they want to you to see, The Media are the biggest enemies of freedom of speech, All bankers ruining a countries economy should be jailed, and immigration should be stopped, thats cost tens of Billions over 14 yrs to a broken busted bankrupt country like this, lets hope they let this one through, big brother really is here. have a nice day.

The cowardice of this Government is palpable. Their failure to tackle the issue of excessive remuneration & bonuses will perpetuate the bonus greed culture in business. Their failure to stop or condemn the bonus to Heister is disgraceful whether or not he refuses it because it condones the granting of such bonuses & maintains the status quo. No surprise there because they are part of the problem!

no they are not part of the problem, they are the problem.
18:48 on 28/01/2012
Well maybe, but this problem pre dates them so hence 'part of'. Blair, Brown and cronies cooked up this storm, no one else!
18:42 on 28/01/2012
Whilst their is some sympathy for your opinion you should recognise the Contract of Employment which provisions for these payments was put in place by Gordon Brown and Mr Darling.

What about public sector pension contracts...they are easily ripped up when it suits..
18:59 on 28/01/2012
.. and Osbourne has had 2 years to do something about it. Result? Nothing, as usual. The belief in high places that those in charge are entitled to award themselves mega millions has to end! Funny they never vote themselves a cut when things go pear shaped - no they leave with a golden parachute! Shareholders are powerless. Shares are controlled by the same group of people.
17:23 on 28/01/2012
A Scottish problem!
If they want to break up the UK they have to pick up the bills for RBS and BOS and sort out any future liabilities incurred by these failed banks
16:38 on 28/01/2012
Its our money which kept this bank afloat,
we should help decide what bonus
if any, he should get.
wes
18:01 on 28/01/2012
No, we the shareholders should get the bonus until the bank returns all it owes and not before!
18:35 on 28/01/2012
If only life was like that,

I sort of agree, but good luck on spending the 3p you'll get as your share. :-) (1.2m/35m (and that is probably too low for the number of tax payers)
18:01 on 28/01/2012
why is it your money.
18:39 on 28/01/2012
yes, both our tax money, i still pay tax, wes

What planet have you been on these past 3 years?
16:31 on 28/01/2012
If these guys turn the bank around and make a big profit they deserve a much bigger bonus. These are very clever guys who have worked very hard from a young age to get where they are. You will always get jealous low class, under achieving people having a go at people who are successful.
16:52 on 28/01/2012
obviously a *anker put your own letter of choice
17:39 on 28/01/2012
And they will not do it for min wage , neither does our PM work for min wage nor any MP so why just blame Labour
17:42 on 28/01/2012
It has nothing to do with class.people employed by this bank are losing there jobs and its wrong for the head of this bank to take a huge bonus when part of his workforce are facing being out of work as part of its cuts
17:55 on 28/01/2012
Yes that is right. The first thing they will have to do is sort the wheat from the chaff.

And why don't these bankers with mega bonuses give their money to charities?

or would that dent their 'I'm OK damn the rest' attitudes
15:56 on 28/01/2012
I don't bank with RBS but might be best if everybody who does change to another bank
