Snow Baby Born To Marek and Anna Staslow In Frozen Norwich Street

Snow Baby Born In Frozen Norwich Street

A couple have welcomed their new baby into the world - after the mother went into labour in the snow outside her home.

Marek and Anna Staslow left their home off Quebec Road, Norwich, on Monday to travel about five miles to the Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital.

But as they walked to their car it soon became clear it was too late and the baby was on its way.

With the help of an ambulance service call handler who talked him through the process, Mr Staslow was able to deliver his second daughter, Nina, in the snow.

He said: "It all happened so quickly that I didn't really have time to think about it.

"I wasn't sure what I was doing but I had no choice but to hope for the best.

"It took about five minutes and before I knew it I was holding my new baby.

"It was a bit of a panic and the man on the end of the phone kept me calm. The ambulance arrived and took us to hospital to check Nina over.

"We are very relieved and are just glad we have a healthy baby."

The happy couple already have a daughter who is three-years-old.

East of England Ambulance Service worker Dan Apps, who was in just his third week at the trust, offered help on the phone. The ambulance arrived minutes later.

Mr Apps said: "I have to admit it was the call I was most nervous about happening.

"I'd been fine dealing with cardiac problems and other serious calls but this was seeing a new life into the world, it was a huge responsibility but also really exciting at the same time.

"It was great to be able to help deliver the baby but there was a huge sigh of relief afterwards."

Nicholas Jones, assistant general manager of the trust's control room, said: "We wish mother and baby our very best.

"This is such a heart-warming story and all credit goes to our staff for making it so, particularly Dan who was only three weeks into the job when he was faced with the nerve-wracking prospect of making sure a new baby was delivered safely in fairly challenging circumstances."
