Bobby Brown choked back tears as he performed with his band New Edition in Mississippi on Saturday night, hours after his ex-wife Whitney Houston was found dead in Los Angeles.

The I Will Always Love You hitmaker's body was discovered by her minder in her suite at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Paramedics were called to the venue but were unable to resuscitate the singer and she was pronounced dead just before 4pm on Saturday.

Brown was in Southaven, Mississippi preparing for his gig with the reunited New Edition when news of Houston's death broke, and his bandmate Johnny Gill told CNN his bandmate was "struggling" and "devastated" by her untimely demise.

In a group statement, the stars admitted Houston's passing had left them "absolutely shocked and saddened", but they decided the show must go on and pressed ahead with the concert.

Brown took to the stage as planned with his bandmates Gill, Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ralph Tresvant and kicked off the gig with a poignant tribute to Houston, pointing to the sky and saying, "I love you."

Turning to the crowd at the Landers Center, he then admitted he had almost pulled out of the performance as he tried to come to terms with Houston's passing.

Addressing the fans, Brown said: "First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all. Second, I would like to say, I love you Whitney. The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage."

But the show proved too much for the My Prerogative singer and he broke down during a rendition of Tenderoni and briefly left the stage to compose himself.

Brown and Houston divorced in 2007 after 15 years of marriage.

Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston were brilliant performers when at their best. I can never forget "It's My Perogative", one of the most powerful performances ever. So many in show business have succumbed to the spell of drugs.
18:24 on 12/02/2012
Okay now I'm crying. I'm not a fan of Bobby Brown by any means, but for some reason this is the first thing to make me cry about Whitney's death. I think because I believe he really did love her. This is so sad.
18:51 on 12/02/2012
Whitney had a God given talent, drop dead looks and threw it all away over drugs. What a shame and I give part of the blame to Bobby Brown. You should cry Bobby, you helped destroy her. Her voice was basically mediocre at best and she never really recovered.
23:24 on 12/02/2012
Your comment is very contradictory is it not? On one hand you say she had a god given talent. On the other hand you blame her x partially for her demise. They divorced a long time ago and yet she did not recover. Who is to say it was his fault. The industry is notoriously full of drugs! Mediocre voice pmsl she is known to have one of the best voices in the world EVER! at her best at least. Try to make sense as I'm unsure that you know what you are talking about as your post would suggest!
02:18 on 13/02/2012
I meant her voice now is mediocre. I should not have said "was" so thank you for pointing that out to me. Of course she had an amazing voice at one time...no one will ever match her talent. I do believe in personal responsibility as far as the drugs, however. Her voice seemed to be hoarse and the octave range lost. I still loved Whitney and she was too young to die. Relax.

To 'The Voice'... I will always love you, where will my broken hearth go ? .... you will live on forever in my heart. Thoughts and prayers are with you, your family and friends .... I'm missing you .... you might now be able to rest in peace ... xxxx
