Tommy Hilfiger's Secret Indoor Garden

Tommy Hilfiger's Secret Indoor Garden

WHO? All American prepster Tommy Hilfiger.

IN A NUTSHELL: The Amory on Park Lane was transformed into a huge indoor park, complete with autumnal trees, street lamps and - crucially, given New York's sub-zero New York climate - heating. According to Hilfiger, this is a collection for "the woman who moves seamlessly between town and country", but it looked like she might also spend some time on the battlefield, because military influences were loud and clear.

BEG, BORROW OR STEAL: The leather and melton wool belted military-style coats were beautifully cut, as were the quilted suede field jackets. The show finished on an elegant high with a selection of minimalist crepe halterneck dresses in forest green, midnight and burgundy.

F-ROW: Uma Thurman (who is STUNNING in real life), Anna Wintour and a helluva lotta NY socialite types.

VERDICT: Hilfiger is synonymous with all things preppy, but this season things were taken up a notch. The reference to heritage hunting attire and liberal use of tailored plaid, tweed and houndstooth created a feel that was less laid back West Coast American prep, and more British country aristocracy. But it worked - proving that sometimes, just sometimes, a stiff upper lip is no bad thing.
