Strait Of Hormuz: US Aircraft Carrier Abraham Lincoln Sails Close To Iranian Coast

Us Aircraft Carrier Abraham Lincoln

The Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 14/02/2012 15:20 Updated: 14/02/2012 15:30

The US aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln has sailed through the politically sensitive Strait of Hormuz, close to the Iranian coast.

According to the Associated Press, a US cruiser and destroyer flanked the huge vessel. It was shadowed by Iranian patrol boats, but passed through the strait without incident.

Another carrier, the USS John C Stennis, passed through the waterway in late December.

Around 20% of the world’s oil exports pass through the tiny strait.

Iran recently threatened to close the channel following the imposition of sanctions by the EU over the regime’s nuclear missile development programme.

However, the US has stated publically its intention to keep the strait open.

Um, the headline and article make it sound like the aircraft carrier sailed close to the Iranian coast by choice.

If it wanted to go to the American naval base in Bahrain, it's only route had it sailing not just close to the Iranian coast, but actually through Iranian waters for hours, inside some of Iran's islands.

And Iran can legally, in a fully accepted practice, close its waters to transit by the warships of hostile nations (does anyone think the US does not qualify as a hostile nation to Iran)

Its been reported that our government is assisting the us navy by sending one of our ferries that sail from portsmouth to the isle of wight, so for motorists traveling to the isle of wight there may be some disruption.

Hey, it's almost certain to be newer than some of the aircraft carriers.

joda that is such a narrow minded comment... You clearly only watch western news and, even worse - you actually BELIEVE the propaganda being fed to you.. Human Rights groups have gone as far as saying the Israeli's have committed crimes against humanity! And if you did a little research you'd learn that essentially Islam is a peaceful religion... Put yourself in their shoes, how would you react if you had someone trying to force their ideals down your throat and killed your friends and family?? Would you not become so angry that you would defend your home and people? WAKE UP

When will America grow up! The bully in the class room flexing his muscles yet again. When will the Americans engage their brains instead of travelling thousands of miles from their own land to threaten innocent people with their nuclear arms. What I think is more important why have the BBC got a reporter on board this floating war machine. The BBC tries to tell the world that it is fair and unbiased yet it ships one of it s reporters on this ship full of evil weapons of mass destruction?

Iran threatened to close the Straights when if fact they neither own or control all of it. Bit ike France saying they are gonna close the channel. Close your side if you like but the other side is none of their business :)

Think of it as New York threatening to close their highways to traffic.

They can close the land route from Vermont to West Virginia, even though they only control part of it.

All Iran can do is close off the eastern side of the Straights, still leaving the Western side open and as we don't use the eastern side anyway it should have absolutely no impacy. If they try and close the western side, which does not belong to them, then we have a major problem in as much as Iran is interferring in other countrys mainly UAE, parts of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UN would need to step in.

No carrier to put the nonexistence planes on. That would be a bigger problem.

What's wrong with this article??

I'll tell you: " imposition of sanctions by the EU over the regime’s nuclear missile development programme."

Keywords being "missile development" .. It's only ASSUMED they have a missile development programme.. Kinda like how it was assumed Iraq had WMD's...

Personally, if they are indeed developing missiles I hope they do it soon, I have a morbid sense of curiosity to see how the US deals with them after they become a nuclear power...

I think we should let them build a bomb and with any luck somebody in the middle east will cop it, then that region will learn what the devastation a Nuclear bomb can bring, this region clearly missed the lesson learnt at the end of World war 2.

The aircraft carrier is a show of power. I watched the footage on the news earlier and it showed the aircraft carrier sailing through the strait, when Iranian small patrol boats come anywhere near the vessel, the US had their helicopters scrambled to warn away the Iranians.

There's a good reason for that. Power is the only thing the Iranians respect. Weakness is only an invitation to push the boundaries still further.

I think you're mixing things up, American's are the ones who only stop pushing when someone pushes back.

So far, Iran has responded to America's pushing with diplomatic notes of protest, and some sabre rattling. When they push back with something substantial (like saying that American warships are no longer going to be permitted to transit Iranian waters) odds are that the US will (like bullies usually do) respond by pushing harder. Then we'll find out just how good the US military is (and how long support for war lasts) against a modern, industriallized nation with an advanced tech base, and a population that is tired of the US trying to force them to take orders from Washington.
