Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder will sing at a private funeral for Whitney Houston on Saturday, in what promises to be a very musical service.

Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, also confirmed that invitations went out to the singer's ex-husband, Bobby Brown, her co-star in The Bodyguard, Kevin Costner, and talk show presenter Oprah Winfrey.

Houston's long-time musical mentor Clive Davis will speak at the funeral. The eulogy will be given by gospel singer and family friend Marvin Winans.

Organisers have been preparing the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, for the musical part of the service, setting up speakers and drums in the aisles.

Fans without invitations will be kept away, with Newark police saying streets will be shut down for six square blocks around the church.

However, they will be able to watch the funeral on the internet as the Associated Press is streaming the service on http://livestream.com/aplive.

Houston, 48, was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was pulled from a bath at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, California, hours before she was due to perform at producer Clive Davis' pre-Grammy Awards event last weekend.

She was born in Newark and raised in nearby East Orange. She began singing as a child at New Hope Baptist Church, where her mother, Grammy-winning gospel singer Cissy Houston, led the music programme for many years. Her cousin, singer Dionne Warwick, also sang in its choir.

She was one of the world's best-selling artists from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, turning out such hits as I Wanna Dance With Somebody, How Will I Know, The Greatest Love Of All and I Will Always Love You.

But as she struggled with drugs, her majestic voice became raspy and she could not hit the high notes.

What kind of weakness prevents an individual from realising that they are destroying their lives? How incredibly stupid and silly was Whitney Houston, that she could not have looked in the mirror and seen the difference in her appearance or notice the erraticness of her behavior? We all knew she was a death waiting to happen, so please let others learn from her screw up. Bobby Brown has cleaned up his act and is trying to move. Whitney just could not give up the drugs. Her family should at least try and face the reality that as much as they could not stop her, they should not look for some one to blame. They should praise Bobby for keeping her together. This is the price you pay for being an illiterate and thinking nothing can touch you. Whitney was a junkie, and she died as a junkie. Other artists should see and learn.

I think the family ought to take some responsibility but perhaps they have tried their best. Did Clive try his best too as her "mentor". I am actually angry at Whitney, because of her selfishness and stupidity she destroyed a gift that was bestowed on her to serenade the world. As a Christian, she ought to have known better, but as an illiterate she did not. Get an education it helps to sharpen your senses. But God loves and forgives her and I hope we will too. Goodbye Whitney.

Always sad when someone passes but it is of her own doing and that is sad to say. It always amazes me that she is being given the star treatment considering she had done virtually nothing that creative for a long time, just like the great Michael Jackson, another who died early because of drugs that had done nothing for a long time. Both very talented in their day. Rest in peace !

bobby will you pass crocodile tears at her graveside as you comfort your daughter for the passing of her mother, after all it was you who introduced her to drugs.

He may have introduced her to drugs but she didn't have to take them, don't get me wrong i like her and her music but people can't just hold him responsible.

She had a longer career as a drug addict, time we stopped putting these people on pedestals. Bury her quietly and stop glorifying smackheads!

One can only hope that when YOUR time comes and you lay lifeless on a metal slab somewhere before your body is even cold, someone in this great big world of ours will take it upon themselves to recount for the whole world to see likely the most embarrassing, painful and wholly unfortunate public moments of YOUR life as it spiraled out of control, cattily proffered as a bit of ‘trivia’, as your loved ones grapple with the devastation of their loss. Please allow her to Rest in Peace... have u ever thought about what the meaning of the words Rest in Peace?

As I said, stop glorifying smackheads!!! She was by choice in the public eye, a woman who could have afforded all the rehab required but no. She chose substance abuse - people like her do not deserve to be in the public eye or to be held up by the likes of you as some kind of victim that should be revered! Your priorities are warped.
