Bret McKenzie's Man or Muppet has won an Oscar for the being best original song at the Academy Awards 2012.

One half of New Zealand comedy duo the Flight of the Conchords, Mckenzie penned the song for The Muppets film.

Musical supervisor for the film, McKenzie wrote three songs, as well as overseeing the rest of the music.

The New Zealander said in his acceptance speech that he was "genuinely starstruck" when he met Kermit the Frog, but he was a lot shorter than he expected. In reality Kermit "was just a normal frog", he added.

Thanking his family for never making him "get a real job", McKenzie also paid tribute to Jim Henson, describing the Muppets founder as "magical."

"It's a true honour to work in the shadows of such legends", he told the audience.

"He [Henson] was a huge inspiration. He made children's films that he found funny, didn't patronise the minds of children."

The man responsible for bringing the Muppets back to the big screen, writer and actor Jason Segal said afterwards that McKenzie completely nailed how they all felt about the Muppets in his acceptance speech.

It's the first time the Muppets have hit the big screen for twelve years. 'Man Or Muppet' was up against 'Real in Rio', from animated film Rio.
