The Monkees frontman Davy Jones has died at the age of 66.

The Daydream Believer singer passed away at Martin Memorial Hospital in Florida on Wednesday after suffering a heart attack, according to TMZ.com.

The British-born star began his career as a child actor on long-running U.K. soap Coronation Street before finding fame in the 1960s as a member of The Monkees, a group formed to star in a TV series of the same name.

The band split in 1971 and Jones went on to establish himself as a solo star. He also joined forces with his fellow Monkee Micky Dolenz to form their own group, Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart, with songwriters Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart.

The I'm A Believer hitmakers reunited for a disastrous tour in 2001. Another get-together, for their 45th anniversary trek last year , also ended abruptly when the group cancelled the second half of its tour without explanation.

Jones last hit the stage on 19 February for a solo show in Oklaholma. Tributes to the late father-of-four are pouring in on Twitter.

Loui Suarez has expressed his sadness that one of The Monkees has died..."Which one was it?" he asked, "Ferdinand or Evra"?

They were guys in a show acting in a band which became a band. They delivered good clean fun, make believe , they were cheery, optimistic and some of the songs have rightly become classics. I used to enjoy Mike Nesmith in particular, playing guitar with his tie obviously over the strings - all tongue in cheek. I'm a heavy rock fan but I am not ashamed to admit I've got a Best of The Monkees CD in my collection.

I was a very big fan of the Monkees as a child. (Even dressed up as Davy one Halloween.)
They were my favorite group by far but Davy -well he was my idol.
I had all the Monkees albums and even bought a solo LP that was from his pre Monkees day.

It's a very sad thing to lose your childhood idol.

I am greatful to have seen Mickey and Davy at a concert just a few years back when they were on tour with with Barry Williams of the Brady Bunch.
What a great concert.
Oh how the crowed roared
with all those classic tunes. Davy was very friendly and personable too. Told some anecdotes of the old show,a little about his daughters too.
It's too bad that Davy was and all of the Monkees were never inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame.
My thoughts and sympathies go out to his family and friends.
He will be sorely, sorely missed by me and so many people all over. That is for sure.
RIP

He was in a segment of Love American Style, I think called Love and the elopement, where he play an inept guy thatsets his ladder up at the wrong house and ends up falling in love with the girl in the wrong house. It was really funny. And of course, my favorite monkee episode, where Jones, Tork and Dolenz dress up as the Monkeemen to stop Mike from being ripped off by a crooked music publisher.

For those of us who lived/grew up during that era such sad occurrences like this make us feel older. The Monkees were not the US answer to the Beatles. They might have intended it, but in reality the guys never got anywhere near those heights. What they did give us though was a good laugh, genuine charm and happy music that brightened your day whether you were into the Monkees or not. Davy always seemed to be smiling and that alone reminds me of good times and plain old fashioned good fun!
