'Buranovo Grannies' To Represent Russia In Eurovision 2012 (VIDEO)

Huffington Post UK   Alastair Plumb First Posted: 9/03/2012 10:52 Updated: 9/03/2012 11:03

On May 26, the Eurovision Song Contest will be beamed around the continent, with 75-year-old crooner Engelbert Humperdinck representing Britain.

As for Russia? Well, Russia are going for something a little bit different. Something a little bit older, in fact - older than even our boy Humperdinck.

Meet... the 'Buranovo Grannies'. In Russian, that's 'Buranovskiye Babushki', by the way.

The six-strong band of grandmothers hail from the Udmurt Republic in the Russian Urals, and are telling journalists that any cash they raise through their musical endeavour will be used to build a church in their home town of Buranovo.

And if you're thinking this is some kind of joke act, just take a look at their performance on Russian TV above, and remember: they beat 24 other acts with that number, including a duet between 2008 winner Dima Bilan and Tatu's Yulia Volkova.

The song itself is called Party For Everybody, which by us sounds about as Eurovision-friendly as you could ever possibly imagine. Buranovo Grannies all the way!

Sorry, we should show a little patriotism here. Engelbert Humperdinck all the way! And to remind you of Mr. Humperdinck's hey day, here he is, singing Spanish Eyes back in 1969. What. A. Hero.

Russia....Entertainment value 10/10, The Song Zilch.
England..... I think it will be the Last Waltz for Engleburt.

Englebert think you had better throw the towel in now.

Just watched it - couldn't help smiling, especially looking at the little one! If they make people smile they could just win!

Sums up what a stupid competition it is. It should be scrapped. Waste of everybody's money

the little babushka in the headscarf - doesn't know the words or do much singing at all - but she's cute.
Agree with some other posters - if they beat the UK this year then it's surely time we bowed out of this ridiculous Eastern block dominated ' competition'

Knowing the Eurovision Song Contest, they'll probably win!

Oh dear. Surely you don't have to look that unattractive just because you are old. One has even forgotten to put her teeth in.

I liked the babushki, it got me swaying in my chair and they looked so enthusiastic, I'd book 'em for a wedding.
Oh, that reminds me, I have one of those to pay for this year.
Englebert has had his day, there is so much new musical talent out there, why are we dragging someone who is a professional singer out of mothballs when we could be using up and coming singers who have not had a platform to display their talents?

We must have upset someone in an earlier life!

Oh I get it. So this is the reason why Engelbert was pulled out of retirement. The powers that be were worried about the Russian Grannies! LMAO! As if !!!!!

Go on, Charmaine Rohlandt, tap your feet and smile, grannies are great.

Yeah, I agree. It's Engelbert who the "As if" was aimed at. But either way, may the best man/women win!!! I've never managed to watch a Eurovision from beginning to end. The most entertaining part, when I remember to watch it, are the comments.

Note to the BBC, if this beats us,which it probably will, then I think it is time to pull from the Euro vision Song Contest. Which we aught to have done after Sandi Shaw anyway.

We ought to have done that a long time ago, much like we ought to have pulled away from the European Union and saved ourselves a heck of a lot of money that could have been spent on more serious things at home.
Daviejohn, can you sing? You proabably have as much chance of winning the song contest as anyone else. I'm up for a duet if you are.
I can still remember some of the words to 'puppet on a string'.
