Monday's (9 April) announcement came after more than a year of deliberation following Dior's decision to fire John Galliano after the designer was caught on film making anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris cafe.

Simons, who left Jil Sander in February, said: "The first time I heard about the Dior position I thought, 'This feels right.'"

Speaking to the New York Times, Simons added: "I haven't been in the archives yet, but for me the strongest impact is the first 10 years of Dior and how to link that to the 21st century."

Simons' first collection will be unveiled at Dior's autumn couture show.
