The M1 has been closed near Milton Keynes after a man died in a crash involving three lorries early on Thursday morning.

The fatal smash happened around 3.30am between junctions 13 and 14 and the motorway is expected to remain closed for some hours yet, as emergency services attempt to clear the area around the collision.

There are long tailbacks in the area and ”traffic chaos” has been reported. Diversions have been set up via the A509, A4146 and A421 roads.

Bedfordshire police have urged motorists to avoid the area.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Inspector Matt Thompson at the Bedfordshire Police collision investigation unit on 01234 842439 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

time to leave the eu and end the madness of overseas drivers driving like its dodgems
12:04 AM on 04/13/2012
I once witnessed a truck deliberately swerve into a car which was turning right after an altication on a roundabout. I assumed the car driver was lost but must have annoyed the trucker for his indecision. Regardless of what may happen on the road using a lorry like a weapon is complete madness but I have seen some shocking behaviour by truck drivers. Saying that there are many decent truckers about and enough idiot car drivers. However the truck weighs in at 44 tonnes so much more lethal in an idiots hands.

i personally passed the scene of the accident on thursday morning at about 0400, the poor soul who lost his life was 62 and from Skegness, he had absolutly NO chance of survival as his cab was crushed to about 18inches,, regardless of what ANYONE says, a man, possibly a father and grandfather has lost his life doing something that probaly has benifitted ALL OF US at some stage throughout his lifetime on the road, show respect for him and his family and stop all the bitching, no one likes to work nyet this poor man has paid the ultimate price,,,,,, god bless you man,,,

A man who left the house and possibly his family this morning to do his days will never return home again. Maybe you anti truck people should have a little respect sometimes. He, and all truck drivers like myself, are on the road for what reason exactly? To deliver the endless amount of goods that you want to buy. We are there for a reason, try and remember that before you spout your hateful bile. We just do another job like any of you to earn a living. But unlike most jobs large numbers of people hate us for it, as seen in these comments. Hate us for nothing more than keeping your shops stocked up.

So next time your huffing and puffing while driving up the motorway at the amount of lorries on the road ask yourself, do I have a good reason to be here? Often the answer is no. Before you moan on about freight on the rails maybe stop being a hypocrite and use the trains yourself? There's a radical idea for you.

Have you though perhaps its not the amount of lorries that people dislike but the way some of the drivers drive them, now i am not saying ALL but some, and yes i have been involved in an accident on the M20 due to a german lorry driver shunting our car in to the central reservation and not even stopping, i have seen lorry drivers on the phone driving with one hand, driving TO CLOSE to the lorry in front, and having worked for one of the largest Transport companies i also know for a fact that some of them have driven whilst over the limit. And some would finish there day and go and do agency work so were over there drive hrs limit as well. As i said i am not sayin all drivers but they are not all saints either, and yes i know car drivers are the same, but they are not sat in a lorry which is far more dangerous.

According to many of the comments is it the amount. And who said they were all saints? I didn't
06:47 PM on 04/12/2012
wow , never knew ther was so many perfect drivers on the road?
05:26 PM on 04/12/2012
Too close, too fast ..... such "accidents" have always happened and always will. The question I have to ask is..... were any foreign truck drivers involved.
05:05 PM on 04/12/2012
What all this ammounts to is the fact that someone wont be going home to their family tonight, and that lives have been changed forever because of this awful accident. I am sure no one involved left home this morning with the intention of killing someone. There are careless car, and lorry drivers, and careless motorcycle riders. There are also very good drivers in each catagory. It would be a great world if we were all perfect, unfortunately we are not.

My condolances and love to all concerned

Driving along this morning, I noticed a car waiting in the layby, traffic was doing about 60mph. Without warning the driver shot across my lane and into the lane going in the opposite direction. I stood on the brakes and missed him by inches. I made a suitable gesture. Some people shouldn't be allowed on the road, let alone in in charge of a car!

I think it would be much more helpful if everybody stopped tearing chunks out of each other. Car drivers stop blaming HGV drivers and vice versa. We are all guilty of poor driving at times. There are good and bad HGV drivers and good and bad car drivers, if everybody stopped blaming, or pointing the finger at others and thought about how they themselves could make the roads safer, it might have more of a positive impact than what everyone is saying right now.

Think what YOU can do to improve things.

I dont think foreign lorry drivers should be aloud on our roads , simple take the containers to the ferry ,let the driver at the otherside pick it up and take it to its destination , same here any lorrys go to ferry port pick up container and drive it to its destination ,,there is really no need for all the lorries on our roads ,,,did anyone see the great knicker race on tv .? it was very interesting , a looy load of knickers set off from france to be imported to england , at the same time a lorry load of knickers set off from the UK to be exported , whats all that about inport export , knickers are knickers , the french can make knickers we can make them ,,,why put 2 lorries on the road ?
05:07 PM on 04/12/2012
i agree and if they need to drive over here they should take a driving test in england. more so with all the polish and other europeans imigrating here, they should have to take a new test in england on english roads instead of just being able to drive on their own licence which they pasted in their own country which the roads are totally different then ours.
12:35 AM on 04/13/2012
And presumably you'd have British drivers required to pass the French driving test, the Belgian driving test, the Dutch driving test, the Spanish driving test.... and all the rest - before they are allowed to drive on the continent? How expensive would your foreign holiday be then?

Been there done that, Driven HGV's Instructed drivers on HGV's ridden motorcycles and Instructed on them too, There are good and bad with all forms of Transport, HGV's are higher off the ground can see more but still have blind spots that Cars will sit in and cant be seen, motorcycles are at risk all the time with some drivers obstructing them on purpose,But my biggest bugbare is HGV drivers are Tacograph controled on what hours they can drive, But the Public arnt! So this leaves a Family going to Scotland from Land End able to do it it 1 journey now that cant be right, Or Salesmen in Company Cars driving all day and all night, At least Truckers have their Hours controled and I know the Public hate them but remember it takes two to have an Accident and its very sad to lose a life in such a way,
My thoughts are we are all only average drivers and above all chill out and respect others!!!

I was driving home from staying at a friends in Milton Kenyes when, at a roundabout the LGV (and HGV!) behind us decided it wanted to change lanes. There was no room in the lane next to us but this Lorry (must have been about 20 ft?) pushed cars out of the way (badly denting them) and forced its way in. It was half in when the traffic started moving, so it moved and dented our car, a dent about 6 inches deep. In its noving lanes it must have dented or broken or made a noticable mark on about 20-30 cars. I'm not saying lorry drivers are to blame for everything, but they do need to be a bit more careful.

Poor driving seems to be common place, i drive many miles on motorways each year and the standards are getting scary - both lorries and cars. Recently as a passenger I took 32 photographs on a journey of lorries driving 6-10ft apart from eachother. Another load of photos of foolish car drivers in the middle or third lane, driving much slower than the inside lane traffic - forcing undertaking. The worst thing though was as a passenger in an AA truck passing a lorry on the M1 who's driver had a coke in one hand, smoking and had feet on the dashboard!! photograph was taken and reported. Scary to think what consequences of his actions could have been if he'd needed to emergency stop.

We all have to drive with caution and be aware of other cars so that this kind of tragedy does not occur so often, some drivers may think they are undestructable

Why is it nearly always lorries that cause these motorway pile ups and fatalities!

Over the years I have travelled many thousands of miles up and down the motorways and main A roads of Britain and I can honestly say that some of the worst driving I have ever witnessed is by drivers of lorries.

Not only do they pull out in front of you with little notice or regard they also tailgate other drivers and try to overtake when there is clearly little or no chance of them doing so within a reasonable time frame thus causing a tailback for miles behind them.

They are a total menace and it is about time the government imposed lane restrictions and driving hour restrictions on them (they can't travel on major arteries during recognised rush hours or at weekends).
04:44 PM on 04/12/2012
and the result is the price of everything goes up !! No the answer is to impose restrictions on car drivers, they should have a test on their motorway skills as soon as possible after passing their test, and learn how to drive properly in these totally different conditions. The number of car drivers who just indicate and then pull straight out regardless of other road users is phenomenal. When you indicate you are indicating what you INTEND to do it doesnt give you a right to move out regardless. And this also applies to those who have been driving for many years as well. !!
05:33 PM on 04/12/2012
Here here, I get so frustrated that so many drivers just pull out without checking their mirror first - and so many that just indicate as an after thought.
