The Voice Review: Jaz Ellington Takes Last Place, As Will.i.am Wipes Away A Tear

Jaz Ellington stole the last place on The Voice with a rendition of Ordinary People that blew away his coach Will.i.am

Tonight saw a magical conclusion to the final round of spinning chairs on The Voice, as the judges completed their line-ups.

There was only one place left in the competition when Jaz Ellington, a London singing teacher, took to the stage, and Will.i.am was the only coach with a place left on his team.

His emotional gamble (“you always listen to your gut, and my gut was telling me to hang on”) paid off when Ellington cranked out Ed Sheeran’s A Team. Even Will.i.am was left giggling at his good fortune. He said, “As a lesson to every single person on the planet, follow your gut.”

But then, Jessie J suggested he try something else, and he sang Ordinary People, Will.i.am’s own song that had moved him earlier. This time saw the panellist wiping away a tear, with Jessie J also moist-eyed.

Will.i.am could hardly look at him afterwards, while the rest of the panel congratulated him. Danny, an articulate Irishman, was able to speak for all the other panellists when he said, “We musicians live for moments like that.”

Jaz said afterwards while embracing his pregnant wife, “That was the best experience I’ve ever had on stage."

"How long have you been singing?" he was asked.

"All my life."

When he could speak, Will.iam described him as a “little angel with wings”.

Previously, Becky Hill, only 17, had sounded a lot mature than her years with her rendition of Ordinary People. Will.i.am was visibly moved by the sound of someone singing “something that’s dear to my heart, and you took it and sang it your way, and that’s beautiful".

Click through our slideshow for a round-up on what happened to the other contestants on this week's show - have any of them got what it takes to match Jaz's knockout performance? And you can see the effect he had on Will.i.am and the other panellists below...

Jenny Jones - A singing barlady who had previously overcome meningitis, she sang 'Mercy', much to Will.i.am's and Danny's delight. She opted to go with Will.i.am, but their battle raised the question of which panellist was following whom, when it came to making their team choices.

Strange that they were so insistant that he should sing another song - and also that the music should miraculously start up when he did so.
I know one of the girls sang the same song, but they really had it cued up did they - and in the same key? Hmmmm.

Nobody else got a second go and, let's face it, whilst he was a decent singer he was nothing special at all.

Unfortunately, this looks much like the X Factor, BGT etc., in that this is not a competition, it's an entertainment show, where ratings matter more than people.

if you watched the voice last night you would know that Jazz sang the song at the end without music.

ONLY A FEW BARS OF IT and then the piano etc came in with him.

I have to kindly disagree. Although he doesn't have the greatest voice I've ever heard, I was really moved. I think he's plenty special.

Why are so many of the bitterly negative, disparaging, comments in semi-literate English? Does the one reveal the other?
04:07 PM on 04/15/2012
I was under the impression that is discussion was about THE VOICE and NOT a persons English literacy???

I was under the impression I was asking questions.

If it's well worth writing, it's worth writing well.

Didnt think much of him at all. The previous young girl was far better. I have my suspicions about how honest this show actually is.

The most worse decision was that awful singer - the so called friend of AW !

The Voice isn't only beating BGT on quantity, BGT is getting thrashed on quality. The Cowell "Ship of Fools" auditions now seem so dated. The Voice does not insult our intelligence; the candidates are pre-selected and that is clearly stated at the beginning of each show. The rejected candidates are not bad singers by a long way: they are just not excellent.

"Excellent" is an understatement when applied to Jaz Ellington. He's just a very ordinary guy, and a really nice guy, who just happens to be a world-class singer, a true, 100%, real thing. Should The Voice now crash and burn it will always be remembered for bringing us Jaz Ellington.

It's just a teeny bit of a shame that the headline to the report is a little less precise than the report itself, for Ordinary People was not the song on which Jaz was retained by will.i.am. Jaz's Ordinary People was, is, and will always be an instant masterpiece. The musicians knew the track, but they held back to pick up on Jaz's take before coming in. We then witnessed true Art: the act of creation. It seemed to me that will.i.am had never before heard it sung so well, he was so deep in thought after the first couple of bars. Magic.

Will.I.Am, wrote the song and he alone really knows just what the lyrics mean. I can understand him ' feeling it ' but for anyone else to be ' moved to tears ' is ridiculous.
I personally did not find this Jaz to be any better than a lot of the other contestants, but that's most likely WHY I am NOT a judge. The whole show is great though and far outclasses BGT, which appears to allow any idiot to audition just for a cheap laugh. The Voice is not about ridicule. It's about people who CAN sing and the chance that can be offered to alter their life for ever.
May the best singer win.
