Roy Hodgson Favourite For England Managerial Role - Remember Football's Support For Harry Redknapp?

The Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 30/04/2012 10:47 Updated: 30/04/2012 14:49

Roy Hodgson is now on the cusp of nabbing the England managerial role, but what about manager-elect Harry Redknapp?

This morning, Redknapp has been ludicrously compared to Brian Clough as the darling of the media's coronation has been scuppered.

For Hodgson, he will walk into the job knowing he is not the popular choice amongst players past and present, who championed Redknapp for the role ahead of him.

And why's that? Because they said it on Twitter, of course...

Gary Lineker
Hard to see beyond Harry. They are talking of drawing up a shortlist. I suspect it will be very short.

Wayne Rooney
Gutted capello has quit. Good guy and top coach. Got to be english to replace him. Harry redknapp for me.

Ever been such a strong public opinion when it comes to naming the next England manager? I don't know anyone that doesn't want Redknapp.

Rio Ferdinand
I think we need an English manager now, we don't need anything else lost in translation....Harry Redknapp would be my choice by a distance.

“@ConorBrown8: First name you'd put on the England team-sheet for Euros?” Harry redknpp

And with the final word, FA board member, Phil Gartside:

"He's had success at every club he has been at and he sets teams up to win."

What about when he took Southampton down in 2005?

Nice article. If you listen to Talksport - Hawksbee and Jacobs seem to think that the media reflect the opinion of the people. Strange comments from people who are employed by an organisation who employed Keys and Gray who were sacked from Skysports for their behaviour? Were they reflecting public opinion via their media? I really like Hawksbee and Jacobs, they are the only valid presenters on Talksport. They are intelligent broadcasters but I think this comment is misplaced.

Unfortunately Roy Hodgson appears to be a nice person and I am sure after the first couple of dodgy results the "We want 'Arry" campaign will begin!

Simple, Harry speaks his mind, and the FA are only interested in 'yes men'. Not that Roy is a total 'yes man' necessarily, but maybe the FA think he's more tameable than Harry.

Roy was my choice anyway, based on his European experiences.
