Will Young has pipped Adele to the top spot of the 21st century's best-selling single in the UK so far

Pop star Will Young's debut single has been named the country's biggest-selling track of the 21st century so far.

The double A-side Evergreen/Anything Is Possible has shifted more than 1.8m copies since Young won the TV talent contest Pop Idol in February 2002.

Young has managed to hold off competition from soul superstar Adele, whose smash Someone Like You has sold 1.4m copies since its release in January 2011, according to data compiled by the Official Charts Company.

Gareth Gates, runner-up to Young on Pop Idol, came third in the countdown with his cover of Unchained Melody, and the Black Eyed Peas' club anthem I Gotta Feeling and Shaggy's catchy hit It Wasn't Me rounded out the top five.

Could somebody please explain the fascination about Adele to me, how someone who screeches her way through garbage like this can sell so many records really shows how desperately poor the music industry has become.

She expresses the feelings of working-class women who have only totally repressed, harsh, messed up under-educated guys to choose from. She expresses the sadness of women that they will never know true passion like the average French or Spanish or Italian woman takes for granted because British guys fear romance.

I don't listen to Adele, but your description makes her sound more intrigueing, bit like Vettriano's paintings.

I'll take Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Guns N' Roses and Motorhead for the repressed lower class feelings; Led Zeppelin, Joe Bonamassa and Santana for actual romance; sadness of women that they'll never know true passion? Been done to death. And I'll take Megadeth, Metallica, Dream Theater, Yngwie Malmsteen for musicality, existentialism, politics and basically everything other than one note "love" songs. Pop is boring because its always about "love" (i.e. sex or idealistic unrealistic love) or clubbing. At least the bands I've listed talk about something other than those things and involve themselves in issues that make you think, are still personal, and use actual musicality in their work.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I know you'll find that you're in the minority, vis a vie the number of records she has sold, and I for one greatly appreciate the contribution she has made to the music industry.

Jeez, look at some other artists who've sold records by the bucketloads such as Steps, S Club 7, Girls Aloud, for example but can you honestly say they've greatly contributed to the cause of good music? People buy records for all sorts of reasons and I think the reason Adele is successful is because the music media are showing her in a good light but as with everybody they'll soon grow sick of her and given time they'll move on to the next thing. Look at how Britney Spears was portrayed when she started out, she could do no wrong, now she is just a gimmick.
