Being fired by Lord Sugar on Wednesday's Apprentice was presumably nothing compared to the devastating news young mum Laura Hogg received in the earlier weeks of the show.

The Sun reports today that the mum-of-one was taken aside last October - during the contestants' chutney making task - and told that the father of her four-year-old son Reece had been murdered.

Glaswegian Laura, 28, said it was the 'worst moment' of her life.

The bridal shop owner was taken off set by programme makers and told the tragic news that her former love Chris Lindsay had been attacked on the Costa del Sol.

Chris, 34, never regained consciousness and died in hospital five days later.

Laura told the paper: "I was in an absolute state of shock. I just wanted someone to pinch me. I couldn't speak. It was like something from a film.

"When you hear that someone you cared for deeply - and who did something as amazing as giving you a child - has gone through that ordeal it hurts like mad. It was really disturbing."

Laura said she had to wait an hour to find out what had happened after being told by Apprentice 'house nanny' Claire that she needed to speak to her.

After a taxi journey to a 'quiet hotel room' Laura was told the dreadful news.

"I was so confused. I was like 'Oh my God, what's happened? Is my little boy OK? Is my dad ill?," Laura said, saying she 'automatically' thought something terrible had happened.

"That was possibly the worst moment of my life. We were in the middle of nowhere in Essex and the nearest hotel was a 15-minute drive. On the way I was saying to Claire, 'Just tell me what's going on?' I was begging her.

"But she didn't want to say it in front of the taxi driver. Eventually she said, 'It's Reece's dad. He's been murdered'. I was so upset."

Although Laura and Chris were no longer close, she said that there was a point where she thought he was the man she would spent the rest of her life with. Laura walked out of the relationship after two years, and said that she would have left sooner had she not been expecting Reece.

After learning of Chris's death, Laura had to decide whether to leave the show and return home to her son. After bravely sticking with the programme, Laura says she told no one what had happened, and is not even sure if Lord Sugar was aware.

"If Chris had been involved in Reece's life I'd have been home in a flash," she said, "But I thought me going back wasn't going to influence the situation."

She said the show was one of the toughest times of her life - but that she would do it all again.

What a brave lady to have carried on after getting such awful news.
