Flashed Face Distortion Effect: Illusion Sees Angelina Jolie, Mila Kunis And Tom Cruise Turn Hideously Ugly (VIDEO)

Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: Updated: 22/05/2012 14:54

Ever thought Mila Kunis looks like a squashed alien? Or that Angelina Jolie has hideously boggly eyes? Have you noticed Dame Judi Dench’s strangely box-like forehead?

Neither did we… until we watched this video.

On first glance it shows just a series of sickeningly beautiful and handsome celebrity visages. But look closely…focus on the cross in the middle of the screen and watch as these stunning mugs turn increasingly grotesque.

The phenomenon has been termed the “flashed face distortion effect” and was discovered by accident as a University of Queensland researcher idly flicked through a series of images.

On his website, Matthew Thompson describes how fellow undergraduate student Sean Murphy stumbled across the effect while working alone in a lab one evening.

He writes: “He (Sean) aligned a set of faces at the eyes and started to skim through them. After a few seconds, he noticed that some of the faces began to appear highly deformed and grotesque.

“He looked at the especially ugly faces individually, but each of them appeared normal or even attractive.”

As Io9 points out: “It’s not unlike viewing the world through a fun-house mirror that lives in your mind.”

In their paper published last year in the journal Perception, Thompson and Murphy, as well as Jason Tangen present their findings as “a useful tool for investigating contrastive distortion effects and face adaption.”

Below is a similar experiment by the same researchers, featuring non-celebrities. It was awarded second prize in the Best Illusion of the Year Contest, 2012.

And if you just can't get enough of the beautiful people looking rough as a bag of spanners, we've even included a gallery of celebs without their slap under the video. You're welcome.

If you cover on side with your hand the same thing happens. So how is your minds eye distorting the images? Is the video an illustration of what would happen if one were to view illusion first hand?

As a professional photographer with beauty advertising for about 30 years I can see the point of this story, but we don't see each other this way at all. Yes when we stare at the "cross" our minds want to pull together the features that we can imagine to come together as one. That's what it did for me. OK.. so we can say it's grotesque, but to say that flash can do this to someone, is a bit off the mark for me as a pro. I do see what someone appears like prior to a shoot, but then I find images without all the make-up far better with anyone. Beauty is what someone brings to my shoots, and my job is to be in sync and find that moment, that personifies that very essence that person in front of my camera is showing me. Now add the styling, the make-up, the hair, and we start to see the talents of those artists who are expressing their art upon someone they feel is a perfect canvas. Beauty is what we make it to be and more so how it makes us feel, and as much as there is commercial impressions upon us and how we see beauty, we're smart enough to know when it is truly present with us.

I take it the author is British.

It's posted on the Huffington Post UK so that seems like a reasonable assumption. Plus the fact that the comments aren't automatically monitored should have been a clue.

pretty neat. Some of the faces have a Dali type melting clock aspect to them. I wonder what mechanism in the brain/eye connection is at work here?
