Italy V Republic Of Ireland Euro 2012: Ray Houghton's Winning Lob At USA 94 (VIDEO)

WATCH: Houghton's Luck Is In For The Irish V Italy At World Cup 94

Italy face the Republic of Ireland in Euro 2012 on Monday night in what is a match remembered with fond reverence by the Green Army throng.

Their 1994 encounter at the USA World Cup was the Republic's sole win at the tournament but arguably their most famous in their finals history.

Although the 1990 shootout victory over Romania ensured a best-ever quarter-final slot, the magnitude of their victory over eventual runners-up Italy four years later was as shocking as Ireland was unfancied.

In the heat of New York's Giants stadium, the crowd - one of the event's most fervent thanks to the Irish and Italian community in New York - witnessed Ray Houghton lob Gianluca Pagliuca for Ireland's first and only win against the Azzurri.

Yet their opening game win was followed by a 2-1 defeat to Mexico and 0-0 draw against Norway, which saw them scrape through to the second round, where they were beaten 2-0 by Holland.

Italy, on the other hand, progressed past Nigeria, Spain and Bulgaria prior to Franco Baresi and Roberto Baggio's final infamy against Brazil in the Pasadena Rose Bowl.
