Boss Of Striking Teachers Union Has Inflation Busting Pay Package - Including £16,000 Pension Rise

The head of the NUT is on a massive £154,000 a year pay package, a newspaper claims.

Christine Blower's salary and benefits have apparently risen by an inflation busting 10 per cent in the past year. The Sun reports that Mrs Blower saw her 'contributions to her pension rise £10,000 to £36,128.'

The National Union of Teachers' boss is currently leading strike action over Government plans to overhaul public sector pensions.

The NUT has so far failed to negotiate a deal on the reforms, which will result in staff working for longer and making increased contributions before they retire.

One Tory MP told the Sun that Mrs Blower's 'gold-plated' package 'defied belief'.

Gavin Williamson said: "Christine Blower claims to be on the side of hard-working teachers but in reality she's taking an extra £10,000 for her pension, funded by union fees.

She receives more from NUT members towards her pension than the average teacher earns in basic salary.

The NUT however defended Mrs Blower's pension deal and said it was 'equivalent to a secondary head teacher in a state school.'

A spokesman said that Mrs Blower's did not take a pay rise for the current pay year but did receive an 'annual increment'.
