Teacher John Villiers Struck Off For Telling Students 'All Women Are Sluts'

Ex-Army Teacher Described Killing People And Told Students 'All Women Are Sluts'

A teacher who told students "all women are sluts" and described homosexuals as "poofs" has been struck off the register, it has emerged.

John Villiers, a secondary teacher in Glasgow, even attempted to avoid his disciplinary hearing by pretending he was dead.

The 43-year-old was found to have assaulted one pupil by throwing a chalkboard duster at him, discussed prostitutes with another, calling them "shagging whores", and took hold of a third pupil, bent him over and reached down between his legs.

Villiers, who taught Maths and Travel and Tourism at Govan High School in Glasgow, graphically described the medical symptoms of gonorrhoea to his pupils* and bared his chest in class to show a tattoo.

He also told pupils he had killed people while he was a member of the armed forces and used the phrase "that's what happens when the boys play with themselves".

The offences took place within the space of three months during 2009 but the results of the committee hearing - which was held on 19 June, have only just been published.

The presenting officer at the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTC) told the panel how he had received a phone call from a man purporting to be Villiers' brother.

"This person said [Villiers] had died. The caller was unable to provide information about the circumstances of his death. Moreover, the caller refused to provide his own contact details."

The officer made enquiries into the reported death of Villiers but no death certificate was traced.

The committee found Villiers fell "significantly short of the standards expected of a registered teacher and that he is unfit to teach".

"Ten of the complainants involved pupils and arose within the classroom setting. Teachers did not feel safe working with Villiers and pupils did not feel safe in his class. The detail of the sexual comments made to school pupils was deplorable."

Villiers has been struck off the teaching register and prohibited from making an application for re-registration for two years. The former teacher has also been referred under Section 8 of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups Act 2007 so Scottish ministers can consider whether Villiers should be barred from working with children and protected adults permanently.

"The conduct which the Panel found proved demonstrated that children had been harmed and placed at risk of harm," the committee concluded.
