Five-Year-Old Filmed By Parents Swimming With SHARKS

A five-year-old girl has become a controversial YouTube sensation after her parents filmed her swimming with SHARKS.

Anaia Barnes is shot snorkelling underwater in a pink swimming costume as lemon, reef and nurse sharks circle around her in clear blue waters while on holiday in the Bahamas.

The sharks have been described as not being aggressive to humans, though in another part of the film they are seen thrashing around as they tear chunks out of fish.

Anaia's parents, David and Elana, from Connecticut, US, have been accused of 'reckless, irresponsible parenting' after they posted the 9 minute video.

But they hit back, telling ABC's Good Morning America that "life is too short to be boring".

The footage shows that Anaia is swimming with instructors and a group of adults.

In the Youtube post, Elana wrote: "We swam with Reef, Lemon, and Nurse sharks, all very low on the aggression index, yet still very thrilling! Put it on your bucket list!"

The video – which has been seen 29,000 times – divided opinions.

One user wrote: "Precariously endangering the life of your child is something which obviously shows a complete lack of common sense."

However, another user argued: "You have a better chance of being mauled by your family dog, struck by lightning, or getting into a car crash on your way to work then being attacked by one of these sharks."

Anaia's father argued on GMA: "There's just always risk assessments in life every day. I'm more concerned that they don't put seat belts in school buses."
