Rangers Football Club will play in the Scottish Football League Division Three next season.
The news comes after the "newco" proposal to play in the Scottish Premier League was "overwhelmingly" rejected by a 10-to-one majority vote by the 11 other top-tier Scottish clubs at a Hampden Park meeting last week.
SFL chief executive David Longmuir confirmed 25 of the 30 member clubs voted against admitting Rangers into Division One. A reorganisation of the Division One structure had been proposed by the Scottish FA and SPL if Rangers was placed into the second tier.
However an overwhelming majority voted the Ibrox club be placed into the fourth level of professional football in Scotland. Arbroath, Alloa Athletic, Berwick Rangers, Annan Athletic, Clyde, East Fife, Dunfermline, Elgin City and Peterhead were all in agreement prior to the meeting they would opt for the Division Three option.
And First Division clubs Raith Rovers, Partick Thistle, Cowdenbeath, Falkirk, Livingston and Morton all signalled their opposition to the prospect of Rangers playing in the second tier.
Scottish Football League clubs cast the vote after Charles Green and Ally McCoist addressed SFL chairmen prior to the vote on whether or not the "newco Rangers" would be granted a Division Three berth.
