Police Arrest '53 EDL Supporters'

53 men who are believed to be supporters of the far-right group the English Defence League have been arrested for conspiracy to cause a public nuisance in east London.

Met Police officers arrested 53 people at various locations on motorways on the outskirts of the capital on Saturday. The men have since been bailed pending further enquiries.

The men were suspected of planning to cause a disturbance in east London

The arrests were made on M25 motorway near Heathrow Airport and Uxbridge and on the M3 near Bagshot, Surrey. The men were suspected of taking place in a "planned disturbance" in east London on the same day.

A police spokesman said:

"All 53 were males and they were arrested for conspiracy to cause public nuisance before being taken into custody at various locations in central and south London.

"Those arrested are being bailed pending further enquiries, on the condition they do not enter east London to demonstrate for a stipulated period of time."
