Harvard University is to approve a kinky sex club for students with a penchant for whipping, dressing up and fetishes so the group can be "taken seriously".

The society, called Harvard College Munch for Bondage, Discipline, Sadism and Masochism (BDSM), will now be able to apply for grants as soon as it is made official.

The founder of Munch, who uses the name Michael, told a university student paper it was a "joy".

"If you come to campus and you have the sexual interests we represent, you may not even suspect that such a group exists," he told The Crimson. "Pretty much everyone who joins this club always thought they were alone. [Our recognition] shows we are being taken seriously."

The club started off as a small group who met informally in dining halls at the university, ranked fourth in this year's world university rankings. Now it has grown to 30 members and the society hopes to help students who have suffered sexual abuse or trauma.

A Spokesperson for Harvard told The Huffington Post US the college does not endorse the views or activities of any independent student organisation.

  • Stitch and Bitch

Leeds University has its very own "stitch n bitch" society where people stitch...and bitch. But, fear not, it has been hauled into the 21st century and even has its own Facebook page which boasts erm, nine members... This lady is evidently not a student but she is bang on trend with one of the latest crazes to hit universities across the UK. Yep, that's right, granny knitting is now cool.

  • The Cambridge Tiddlywinks society

Perhaps not the most athletically demanding of games but Tiddlywinks has made a comeback. The quaint "sport" is played in universities such as Cambridge, whose students regularly hold tournaments against their old foes Oxford. They describe themselves as a "very sociable society" Credit: PA

  • Sheila and her Dog society

Yes, this is a Cambridge society again - and one which perhaps needs a bit more explaining. According to the society's founders, "Sheila" has a "long and glorious history" - although we are none the wiser as to who this Sheila actually is... The society even has its own website, which describes the members as "innocuous readers of children's stories, dedicated to silliness, kindness and clean fun". Society members gather weekly and any mentions of "horrid grown-up things in our meetings is frowned upon". "From the time the meeting is started until the final Dropping of the Penguin, members are morally six years old. "We welcome everyone with open arms. Erm, after you...

  • The Custard Wrestling Society

Cardiff University's group describe themselves as "an elite group of custard-loving wrestlers with sporting prowess". "Don't get flustered just throw custard" is Cardiff's motto.

  • The Kettle Society

More normal than it sounds, actually. Nottingham students gather to broaden their horizons with the club's tea tasting and around-the-world workshops. "Ladies & Gentlemen, start your kettles!"

  • Mario Kart society

Essex University prefers to keep schtum about the details of this evidently top-secret group. We can only guess it may have something to do with a small Italian called Mario.
