Steven Spielberg must be wondering what he's done to the BAFTA committee, after barely making a ripple on their voting cards for his epic 'Lincoln'.
Despite his 19th century period drama leading the nominations field with ten nods, the film telling the story of Honest Abe's juggling act of slavery abolition and civil war ending came away from the London ceremony with only one statuette - for Daniel Day Lewis for Best Actor, for which the Irish actor had been the clear favourite.
Daniel Day-Lewis was 'Lincoln's only winner at BAFTA 2013
Perhaps it was a giveaway sign that, despite his film garnering so many nominations in both technical and acting fields, including a nod for Tommy Lee Jones in the Best Supporting Actor category and Sally Field for Best Supporting Actress, Spielberg himself had not been recognised in the shortlist for Best Director.
Daniel Day-Lewis had been all but a shoo in for his Award. Accepting it, the actor made fun of his own, much-renowned, Method style of acting.
"Just in case I might have to speak at these awards," he told the appreciative audience. "I've actually stayed in character as myself for the past 55-years."
He also paid grateful tribute to his director, as the film's "rudder, helmsman, the boat and the sea we sailed on.. to the end of my days, thankyou Steven."
