When the multi-millionaire Harry Potter novelist J.K. Rowling announced she was writing a book for adults, the publishing world stood still. Top secret meetings were held around the world, until details of The Casual Vacancy were finally announced.
The novel is set in the suburban West Country town of Pagford, and begins with the death of parish councillor Barry Fairbrother. His death creates a vacancy, which sparks a series of catastrophic events.
The Casual Vacancy became the fastest-selling novel in the UK, topping one million sales worldwide in the first three weeks.
