The shocking story of the nine-year-old girl who gave birth in Mexico took a heartbreaking twist today when it was revealed that doctors sterilised the child mother against her family's wishes.
According to reports, doctors carried out the procedure soon after the baby was born on January 27 without seeking the consent of the young mum's own mother.
She has now reported the Zoquipan Hospital in Guadalajara to the local human rights commission, which is investigating.
Several Mexican newspapers have unveiled a tangle of lurid claims and abuse allegations in the wake of the news about the baby girl's birth in Zapopan, in Mexico's western Jalisco state.
One said that the girl, called Dafne – who was eight when she became pregnant - didn't realise she was expecting until seven months into her pregnancy.
And her mother – who allegedly worked as a prostitute - didn't think what had happened to her young daughter was a crime. At first it was thought the father was the girl's 15-year-old boyfriend, but now DNA tests are being carried out on several men, following allegations that the stepfather abused one of his own daughters.
The respected El Occidental newspaper said that Dafne could have been raped multiple times over several months.
It also claimed that after seven months of the pregnancy when everyone found out her boyfriend he asked her to run away with him, but she refused. The authorities are searching for him after he fled following the birth.
Neighbours in Colonial los Olivos told MailOnline that they were relieved that Defne's stepfather had left the family home.
There are claims he used to beat Dafne, as well sleep in the same bed as her and share a bath. He is also believed to have spent time in jail for abusing his biological daughter.
A relative of the stepfather said: "What he has done has shamed our family. I don't know why the girl's mother lets him carry on the way he has. They're both liars and I think it's terrible what has happened.
"Dafne is a child. She's just a child. The girl's mother is in love with him so she protects him, and this is what happens."
Dafne has 10 brothers and sisters and is said to be doing well and happy that the birth is over. She is the 'caretaker' of her family - she does not go to school, instead spending all day in her home cooking and only venturing out to go to the shops.
Under Mexican law it is a crime to have sex with anyone under 15, even if they give consent.
The hospital only became aware of her case when Dafne was brought in about to give birth, surrounded by anxious family members. She had the baby by Caesarean section because of her age.
Jorge Villasenor, from the state prosectors' office, said: "We are looking for the young man (the boyfriend) to get his story because she does not understand what has happened. This is a rape or child sex abuse case."
