Girl, 10, Catches Newborn Baby Dropped By Mum From Blazing Building

A 10-year-old girl caught a newborn baby after its desperate mum dropped it from the window of a blazing building.

Zna Gresham is being hailed hero after she caught the baby, dropped from the second floor window. The drama happened during a fire at the building in North Decatur, Atlanta, Georgia.

As the blaze took hold, the frantic mum literally dropped two of her children, aged two and three, out of the window to escape the smoke and heat.

As they landed, they sustained minor injuries. She was about to do the same for her baby when neighbour Zna appeared and held open her arms to catch the falling child.

She told local news: "The lady upstairs, she was dropping her babies, I caught the newborn baby from falling; before it hit the ground I had caught it."

According to fire chiefs, the mother had no choice but to drop the three children.

DeKalb County Fire Battalion Chief Christopher Morrison said: "The smoke was rising so quickly to the upper floors, they couldn't make their way outside their upper apartment into the hallway because of the smoke.

"They just went to a window and they threw the child outside to the people, to the neighbours, down on the ground."

Two adults were also hospitalised. The blaze appeared to have started in a kitchen in a first-floor unit of the complex. It destroyed one unit in the building and damaged three others, leaving a dozen residents homeless.
