Meteor California: 'Fireball' Lights Up The Sky - And Social Media

'Fireball' Lights Up The Californian Sky - And Social Media

Reports of an 'insane' fireball spotted over the skies of California have been explained a probable meteor strike.

The bright spot was seen in the sky at about 8pm local time, and was reported on social media from "Santa Barbara to San Diego" according to the AP.

The US National Weather Service said the asteroid was probably associated with the South Taurids meteor shower.

It is not thought that any remnants of the asteroid actually hit the surface, and no injuries were reported. Coincidentally, three studies were also published today which stated the threat of deadly asteroids to Earth might be as much as ten times worse than previously thought.
