One of the great things about the internet is how it can take something that really deserves to stay in the 1990s - pogs, single-button video games - and make them apparently modern and relevant.

To that end, the indie band Young Rival have decided to use 'Magic Eye' technology ('random dot autostereograms') to make their new video ('Black is Good') almost unbearable to watch, but sort of cool if you don't think to hard about it.

The footage for the video was captured using an Xbox Kinect video controller, and so is fairly low resolution, but the effect is quite impressive if you're able to decouple your eyes correctly.

The team behind it - director Jared Raab and programmer Tomasz Dysinki - said:

"We collected real-time depth data of the band performing the song “using an X-Box Kinect hooked up to a computer. The computer was running software called RGBD toolkit, designed for capturing the depth information from the Kinect using its built-in infrared system. Once we had our depth information, we unpacked it into image sequences and edited these sequences as if they were regular video."

If you have trouble with the image there's also a 'cross-eye' version, as well as one which just shows the images in a normal style. Though that sort of misses the point.

Anyway - it seems to be working. The video has 650,000 views so far, which is 100 times as many as their video for 'Better Things To Do' released three months ago.
